LIVESTREAMING: 68th Ghana’s Independence Day Celebrations

Ghanaians across the country will, today, March 6, 2025, hold celebratory activities to commemorate the nation’s liberation from colonial rule nearly seven decades ago.

The anniversary marks 68 years since Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence in 1957, a historic milestone that paved the way for other African nations to break free from colonial rule.

Led by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana successfully negotiated its independence from British colonial rule and officially declared its sovereignty on March 6, 1957.

Nkrumah, who became the country’s first Prime Minister and later its first President in 1960, famously proclaimed, “The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of Africa.” His leadership inspired a wave of decolonisation across the continent.

Unlike previous years, when grand parades and festivities filled the historic Black Star Square and regional capitals, this year’s celebrations will be “modest” to cut costs, according to the government.

Instead, a parade will be held at the Jubilee House, the seat of government, where President John Dramani Mahama will address the nation to mark the occasion.

Despite the scaled-down nature of the celebrations, the significance of the day remains paramount, as Ghanaians reflect on the country’s journey, the progress made, and the challenges ahead.

The event will also highlight the role of past and present leaders, traditional authorities, and citizens in shaping Ghana’s democratic and economic landscape.
