A TEENAGER, 17, has died following a swimming incident in Co Carlow.
It is understood the young boy got into difficulty while swimming with a friend in the River Barrow at around 6.30pm yesterday.
The alarm was raised after the boy’s friend managed to get to shore after noticing him in difficulty.
It is currently believed the friend attempted to assist his pal prior to raising the alarm but began to struggle in the water too.
A search operation was launched at the location in Milford outside Carlow Town yesterday evening.
Both members of the Gardai and emergency services were involved in searches at the scene last night.
Gardai have since confirmed the body of a teenager was recovered as part of the operation involving the Garda Water Unit.
The teenage boy’s body has been transferred to Waterford University Hospital.
A post-mortem will take place and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
In a statement today a Garda spokesperson said: “Following a search operation involving Gardai and emergency services, the Garda Water Unit recovered the body of a male, aged in his late teens, from the River Barrow at Milford, Co. Carlow, yesterday evening, Tuesday 17th June 2025.
“His remains have been transferred to Waterford University Hospital where a postmortem examination will take place in due course. A file will be prepared for the Coroner.”
It is understood the deceased is a local secondary school student.
Elsewhere this morning, Gardai are appealing for witnesses to a fatal road traffic collision in Mayo.
The single vehicle collision. involving a motorcycle, occurred on the the R331 at Friarsquarter East in Ballinrobe yesterday.
A man in his 40s were pronounced dead at the scene and the road was closed.
WITNESS PLEA
A garda spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing for witnesses following a fatal single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a motorcycle, on the R331 at Friarsquarter East, Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, on Tuesday 17th June 2025.
“Gardai and emergency services responded to the collision, involving a motorcycle, that occurred shortly after 7.40pm.
“The motorcyclist, a male aged in his 40’s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has been conveyed to Mayo University Hospital.
“The Coroner has been informed and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.”
