Akanvariba calls for national dialogue to reform public sector recruitment

Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, the Minister-Designate for Public Sector Reforms, has proposed a national dialogue aimed at overhauling the recruitment processes within the public sector.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, February 24, Akanvariba emphasised the urgent need to reform the existing system to promote efficiency, meritocracy, and transparency in hiring across government agencies.

She shared her vision for revitalising public sector operations, focusing on capacity building, institutional strengthening, and the use of technology to combat corruption and boost productivity.

Akanvariba underscored the importance of a comprehensive review of recruitment practices, advocating for a fair and transparent system that prioritises merit. She noted that the public sector plays a crucial role in national development, and flaws in recruitment processes undermine effective governance and service delivery.

“I will be looking at training or capacity building in the public sector and I will be looking at building and strengthening public institutions and the way we hire people into the public sector, and we should therefore have a national dialogue on how we hire and recruit into the public sector,” she stated.
