Coronation Street legend returning nine years after quitting and retiring from acting

RYAN Thomas is making a bombshell return to Coronation Street nine years after quitting and retiring from acting.

The actor – who plays Jason Grimshaw in the ITV soap – has agreed to a limited return to give on-screen mum Sue Cleaver a fitting send off as Eileen.

He will begin filming later this month for a brief stint to coincide with Sue’s send-off.

A source said: “It was a no brainer for Ryan to return when he was asked – it’s all for Sue.

“She’s like a second mum to him and he was willing to do anything to make her send off as special as she deserves it to be.

“He’s not acted for a while so it’s a bit daunting but he played Jason for so long that he’s looking forward to going back to the cobbles.”

Jason was last seen in 2016 but has been mentioned frequently over the years with news of his life in Thailand.

The actor first appeared on the cobbles in 2000 and stayed for 16 years before quitting the show.

He went on to appear in Aussie soap Neighbours and win Celebrity Big Brother.

Last year he took part in Dancing on Ice and was crowned champion.

In 2021 Ryan opened up about his struggles with his acting career and announced he had decided to retire.

“It’s so hard for me,” he said on the Mancs on the Mic podcast.

“I started off acting, I started off in that game and I really lost the bug for it.

“I feel the reason for losing the bug is rejection and going to auditions and not getting them.”

Ryan also blamed trolling on social media for his decision.

He added: “I’ve never had that before because social media wasn’t around.

“I never got it in Corrie because I never had social media when I was in Corrie.

“If I did, it was at the end but I was so established there that people saw me as fixtures and fittings, so I never really got that sort of negative criticism.

“It happens in all aspects but I just found it really, really hard to deal with at first.

“I always think, ‘Oh, it’ll [the desire to act] come back at some point and maybe it will, and it’s still something that I have in my locker if I want to explore it again.

“Right now I’m really happy with the direction I’m going.”

But now he has decided to come out of retirement for a stint back on the cobbles for “second mum” Sue.

Sue announced she had quit Corrie after 25 years having vowed to “live fearlessly” after turning 60 last year.

“I’ve had 25 privileged years of working on Coronation Street,” she told The Sun earlier this year.

“The door is still firmly open but as I reached my 60th year, I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly.”

Coronation Street’s 2024 shock exits

Corrie has said goodbye to several cast members this year. Let’s break down who’s left the famous soap:

Eliza Woodrow (Savannah Kunyo) has said farewell to Corrie to start a new life in Germany.

The youngster moved to live with her dad Dom Everett, who went back on the £10,000 bribe Eliza’s grandfather Stu had offered to keep him out of her life.

Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) will bow out of the soap this summer when he loses his fight with motor neurone disease (MND) in tragic scenes.

After being diagnosed last year, the fan favourite was devastated to learn he only had months left to live.

Viewers know he is planning to take his own life to end his suffering.

Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) departed the cobbles after being offered the opportunity of a lifetime to study in America.

Though she struggled to decide with her stepdad Paul’s impending death from MND, she was convinced she had to live her life to the full.

Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) has struggled with the sudden departure of his father Peter from the cobbles.

The Weatherfield legend left his family and loved ones behind on Boxing Day, 2023, when his wife Carla Connor encouraged him to travel around the world with a friend.

Simon’s been on a downward spiral ever since and his exit could end in tragedy.

Alya Nazir is set to leave the cobbles as actress Sair Khan prepares to go on maternity leave ahead of the birth of her first child.

It looks likely she’ll be heading to Dublin after securing a lucrative new job, leaving her colleague and fling Adam Barlow behind.

Show stalwart Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, is taking a break to star in the Sister Act The Musical UK tour. She will be back filming in May once her dates on the tour come to an end.

Her character left the Street after her son Jason broke his back after falling off a moped in Asia.

Sue gave bosses plenty of time to come up with a suitable exit for Eileen and brought back her sister Julie Carp for it.

However in a heartbreaking twist, Julie’s return is a final one with the iconic character facing a terminal cancer diagnosis.
