Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) invites qualified candidates to apply for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Participatory Design for Climate Change Adaptation for the year 2025.

Stipend: R300,000.00 per annum (tax-exempt)
About the Fellowship
The Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is a one-year fixed-term opportunity focused on community-based participatory design for climate change adaptation. Hosted by the Directorate for Community Engagement and Development (CEAD), this role aims to empower researchers to collaborate on innovative, sustainable, and community-driven climate solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead participatory action research in climate change adaptation
- Facilitate participatory design circles with local communities
- Coordinate sustainable smart agriculture and climate modelling initiatives
- Produce publishable research from qualitative and quantitative data
- Engage Indigenous Local Knowledge Keepers (ILEK) in climate-smart practices
- Draft grant proposals and co-supervise postgraduate research
- Present research at relevant platforms (seminars, conferences, symposia)
- Contribute to academic literature through peer-reviewed journals
- Monitor, evaluate, and report on research progress
- Establish collaborative research networks
Minimum Requirements
- PhD earned in the last 5 years in one of the following:
- Climate Change Adaptation
- Environmental Management
- Agricultural Economics or Extension (focus on sustainability)
- Development Studies or related fields
- Minimum 2 accredited journal publications in the past 24 months
- Knowledge of Indigenous Local Knowledge (ILEK) systems
- Experience with SPSS, Stata, or SAS
- South African citizens or permanent residents are prioritized
- International candidates must hold a valid Section 11(1)(b) academic visa
- No prior full-time academic/professional employment
Recommended Experience and Skills
- Passion for community development
- Experience in mentoring postgraduate students
- Knowledge of local languages (advantageous)
- Familiarity with climate modeling software
- Strong literature review and academic writing skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Excellent organizational and communication abilities
- Skilled in publication targeting and data interpretation
