WIMBLEDON includes a secret maze of underground tunnels that help stars and staff members get around.

The All England Club routinely welcomes more than 40,000 fans per day during the Championships, which can lead to it getting pretty crowded.

In 1997, Wimbledon chiefs opened a network of tunnels beneath the grounds, making it easier to get from A to B.

The maze of tunnels includes passages to and from No1 Court, the locker room and plenty of places in between, including a drug testing room.

It also leads to the Aorangi practise courts, largely closed off to the public.

In 2017, two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal infamously hit his head while warming up for a match on No1 Court in one of the tunnels.

The passages also lead to both staff and media restaurants, the former beneath No1 Court and the latter located under Court 14.

The network of tunnels includes an incredible ball bunker.

Wimbledon gets through around 53,000 tennis balls during the tournament each year.

Prior to being used, they are stored underground at exactly 20 degrees.

This meticulous planning keeps the balls consistent as players move through the tournament.

After use, balls are sold on at the All England Club, allowing fans to get their hands on the props of the stars.

Money raised goes towards Wimbledon’s charitable foundation.

A hallmark of the All England Club is its desire to innovate while keeping with its traditions.

Wimbledon have purchased the golf club located opposite the grounds, and are hoping to expand onto the site in the coming years.

Ambitious plans include a new 8,000-seater show court and would take the daily capacity to more than 50,000.

Wimbledon chiefs have earned planning permission for the bold project, although this is subject to an ongoing judicial review.
