Man, 20s, killed in horror single-vehicle motorbike crash on busy road in Co Laois as gardai close route & launch probe

A MAN, aged in his 20s, has been killed in a horror single-vehicle motorbike crash in Co Laois.

The motorcyclist was sadly pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on the N77 in Abbeyleix yesterday.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene at the junction of the Portlaoise Road and Ballyroan Road at around 7:50pm.

The body of the deceased was removed to the mortuary at Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.

There were no other injuries reported following the collision.

The scene remains preserved pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators this morning.

The road from Main Street in Abbeyleix to Tonduff Cross on the Portlaoise Road is closed.

Local diversions are in place but drivers have been urged to plan their routes accordingly and expect delays.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash has been urged to come forward and assist investigating gardai in their probe.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

“Any road users or pedestrians who were in the area between 7:00pm and 8:00pm, and have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this available to investigating Gardai.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Abbeyleix Garda Station at 057 873 0580, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

The young man was the 85th person and 15th motorcyclist to lose their life on Irish roads so far this year.

A total of 90 people died in collisions on Ireland’s roads during the same period last year.

E-SCOOTER CRASH

Separately, another man in his 20s was left with “serious injuries” after a collision involving an e-scooter on Barrack Road, Magniers Hill in Co Cork yesterday.

The scooter was the only vehicle involved and Gardai were alerted to the incident around 4.30pm.

The driver of the scooter, a man in his 20s, was taken to Cork University Hospital to be treated for injuries described as serious.

A spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.

“Road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were in the area at the time are asked to make it available to Gardai.
