Ellie Scotney lifts lid on signing for Jake Paul, from YouTube star IGNORING her DM to her nephew’s gobsmacked reaction

IT ALL started with a DM to Jake Paul – one he ignored.

Ellie Scotney tried her luck by reaching out to the YouTuber-turned-prizefighter and women’s boxing advocate.

But Paul did not see the message – after all he does have nearly 30 MILLION Instagram followers.

So Scotney – sensing her options were becoming limited – turned to Paul’s right-hand man Nakisa Bidarian.

Paul and Bidarian launched Most Valuable Promotions in 2021 and have now become the premier platform for female fighters.

So while her DM to Paul fell on death ears, fortunately Bidarian checked his messages.

Scotney, 27, said with a wide smile: I just dropped Nakisa a message and everything kind of fell into place for me.

“It’s been a bit of a mad one but I’m enjoying every second.”

What’s worse is Paul HAS since seen the original message as Scotney said: “He’s actually read it now!

“That’s even worse. I’d rather be in his requests. But Nakisa came through and he opened it.”

Scotney’s manager Jake – brother to her trainer Shane McGuigan – was soon on the phone thrashing out a deal with MVP.

She said: “I think within three hours my manager Jake was on the phone and they were touching ties.

“I had a call and within, I think about two months, I was out in New York experiencing it for myself.

“It’s all happening fast but let’s call it God speed.”

Scotney now returns on Friday in a historic all-women’s card on Netflix – facing Yamileth Mercado in an WBC, IBF, and WBO unification bout.

Already since signing with Paul, the IBF and WBO bantamweight champ admits she has inherited an all-new wave of younger fans.

She said: “My nephew couldn’t care less about boxing, as soon as he heard Jake Paul he was like, ‘I’ve got to meet him! I’m gonna come to your fight.’

“I’ve had so many kids asking and it’s something very different in sport and again, Jake’s generating more eyes and voices into boxing.”

Paul, 28, himself is now 12-1 in the ring and most recently beat ex-middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 39, over ten rounds.

He even landed himself a controversial No14 ranking within the WBA.

But his push for women’s boxing is something even his greatest detractors cannot take away from him.

Scotney said: “He’s a character in and out of the ring and he’s getting so many eyeballs on the sport but what he’s doing for female boxing in itself tells you everything you need to know.

“He’s someone that’s dived in, there’s been a little bit of a detour in his boxing but I feel like he’s really got hold of it and we’re gonna see a bit change and we’ve got Jake to thank.”

Scotney has her eyes on undisputed glory at 8st 6lb – and believes she is in the right place to achieve it – but it starts on Friday at Madison Square Garden.

She said: “I think it’s everyone’s dream and I’m two fights away but I’ve got a hard fight in front of me July 11th and I’ll be going in to make a statement.

“Although I’m a unified champion, I never really got what comes with it. Whereas this is supplying that.

“It’s one thing saying you want it, now it’s in my hands I’ve got to run away with it and that’s what I’ll be doing July 11th.”
