Black Clover Boasts a Record Even Elite Shonen Like Assassination Classroom Can’t Flaunt

It is extremely common amongst anime from the same genre to have some sort of rivalry amongst each other. When it comes to the Shonen anime space, fandoms are quite passionate about their favorites. But Black Clover has mostly been looked down upon, and it’s high time for it to stop.

After all, it has already been proven that Black Clover ranks higher than quite a few popular anime. Assassination Classroom is one of those series that Yuki Tabata’s work has already overtaken. Assassination Classroom is one of the most legendary Shonen anime ever, and for Black Clover to have beaten it is truly a surprise.

Black Clover once surpassed a Shonen elite like Assassination Classroom

In November 2019, Crunchyroll released a list of anime that it believed to belong to the Top 100 for the past decade. This includes anime series, films, and OVAs. The website did not rank the anime or choose an overall winner, but it only created an alphabetically ordered list. (Which probably saved it from a ton of controversies)

In the list, Black Clover ranked amongst the top 100 anime, though it could not get into the top 25 list. However, fans were quick to notice that some highly acclaimed anime were missing from the list. Series like Assassination Classroom, Free! and Your Lie in April were omitted from the list despite their apparent influence on the anime industry.

While on the one hand, it indicates that Crunchyroll might have been more biased towards more recent series or ones that were ongoing at the time. On the other hand, it could be entirely possible that the Crunchyroll metrics did not suggest Assassination Classroom was worthy of getting into the list. Black Clover, however, has secured its place already. But had Crunchyroll created a ranked list, the standings of the series would have become even more clear.

Black Clover was recently among Netflix’s most-watched anime of 2024 (2nd half)

Well, the 2019 report might be a bit old to keep holding on to. So here’s the latest report published on LinkedIn that highlights the most-streamed anime on Netflix for the second half of 2024. According to the list, Black Clover has actually made it to the fifth spot.

The first four spots are occupied by Naruto, One Piece, Demon Slayer, and Pokemon, respectively. Black Clover has a total of 138 million watch hours, and Naruto, which has claimed the #1 spot, has 330 million. Black Clover has already beaten extremely popular series like Dandadan, My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, and more.

This proves just how popular Black Clover actually is, despite being on an indefinite hiatus for years. Both old and new Shonen fans love the series, and once the fifth season is announced, it is bound to attract even more attention. So, let’s hope that the creators and anime staff finally come to their senses and give fans the Black Clover season 5 that they deserve.

Black Clover anime is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
