Full list of European countries under heatwave alerts as map pinpoints 42C scorcher & deadly temps grip Spain & Portugal

THE full list of European countries placed under a heatwave warning has been revealed with a new map showing temperatures soaring to 42C.

The deadly heatwave has already claimed the lives of several locals and tourists as it grips parts of France, Italy, Spain, Greece and several other hotspots.

A 10-year-old American girl is understood to have died after collapsing during a visit to the Palace of Versailles in France.

French authorities have confirmed over 300 people have sought treatment for heat related illnesses amid the heatwave.

In Italy an 80-year-old man died after suffering heart failure in Genoa and two other men died on beaches in Sardinia.

A child died in Spain after suffering suspected dehydration and heat exhaustion after being left in a car as temperatures rose to over 35C in the Costa Dorada town of Vallam.

And two farmers died after being trapped by wildfires in Spain’s Catalonia region.

As a result of the extreme temperatures several areas of Europe have been placed under severe weather alerts as map show temperatures into the mid 40s.

SPAIN

In Spain temperatures in the North of the country is expected to reach 36C today and over the coming days.

Weather bosses have placed a majority of regions under a yellow alert, warning: “Moderate damages to people and properties may occur, especially to those vulnerable or in exposed areas.”

Further down the country Aemet have issued orange severe high-temperature warnings as temperatures spill into the 40s.


In Madrid where temperatures are expected to reach 39C they warned: “Be prepared. Take precautions and keep up to date with the latest weather forecast.

“Severe damages to people and properties may occur, especially to those vulnerable or in exposed areas.”

Temperatures at the very bottom of Spain in tourist hotspots such as Seville will reach 42C.

PORTUGAL

In Portugal several yellow warnings for high temperatures have been issued by their weather bosses IPMA.

They warned: “Persistence of high values of maximum temperature, especially in the eastern part.”

Temperatures across the country will sit in the high 20s, with areas near Lisbon soaring to 31C.

FRANCE

Meteo France have issued several health warnings for locals as the country sits under an orange weather alert.

The weather officials warned: “Drink water several times a day. Continue to eat normally. Wet your body several times a day using a spray, a washcloth or by taking warm showers or baths.

“Do not go out during the hottest hours. If you must go out, wear a hat and light clothing. Try to go to a cool or air-conditioned place for two to three hours a day, whilst continuing to respect physical distance and barrier gestures.

“Limit your physical and sports activities. During the day, close shutters, curtains and windows. Ventilate at night. If you have elderly, chronically ill or isolated people around you, check up on them or visit them.

“Take them to a cool place. In case of discomfort or behavioral problems, call a doctor. If you need help call the town hall.”

The stark alert continued: “Everyone is in danger, even those in good health. Danger is greater for elderly people, people suffering from chronicle diseases or from mental health troubles, people who regularly take medicine or people who are isolated.

“Watch for dehydration and heatstroke, especially in sportsmen and people working outside. Pay attention to children.

“Heatstroke symptoms are : a fever above 40°, hot, red and dry skin, headaches, nausea, drowsiness, intense thirst, confusion, convulsions and loss of consciousness.”

It comes as recent maps show parts of Mersillie expecting at least 36C while parts further west will be slightly cooler at around the mid 20s.

AUSTRIA

Geosphere Austria are warning: “Intense heat stress must be expected.”

It comes as the majority of the country has been placed under a orange temperature alert.

Some areas in southern Austria are under red “extreme high temperature” alerts.

Mercury in these areas is already at 36C today.

ITALY

Italy are under an orange heat warning as temperatures during the day climb to 34C and night temperatures remain at 22C.

Meteo Swiss have warned: “Drink liquids regularly and in sufficient quantities. Protect yourself from direct sunlight.

“Allow air to circulate through your home or other buildings before the hot part of the day, i.e. during the night and early in the morning.

“Avoid vigorous physical activity or compensate for salt loss during or after sport activities.

“Contact those around you who fall into the risk category and ensure that they are well and able to follow the existing recommendations.”

GREECE

Greece is being scorched by sweltering temperatures and powerful winds.

Wildfires have been raging uncontrollably in Crete since Wednesday, with severe northerly winds continuing to fan the flames.

Over 1,500 people fled the wild blaze and six people were hospitalised for breathing problems, with evacuations  ordered at three sites outside the port of Ierapetra on the island’s south coast.

A Status Yellow high temperature warning is currently in place across the Ionion Islands, which includes Zante, Ithaca, Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, Paxos and Kythira.

The same alert in currently in place in the Epirus and Agrinio regions, with weather experts warning temperatures could hit 35C.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service warned: “Extremely high air temperature values (during the day), expected to reach locally 37C.

“Be aware. Some health risks amongst vulnerable people e.g. the elderly and very young are possible.”

OTHER PARTS OF EUROPE

Several other areas of Europe are also facing extreme heat warnings.

DHMZ have warned “health risks are possible” as temperatures reach 32C in parts of the sunshine hotspot.

In Germany, a yellow “strong heat” warning has been issued by their weather bosses DWD as temperatures rise to the high 20s.

Poland’s weather experts at the Metrological Forecast Centre in Warsaw have placed the country under an orange alert as temperatures soar to over 36C.

And Slovakia and Hungary have also been placed under heat warnings by their relevant authorities.
