SPFL youth star scores FOUR goals in thumping win as Scotland end seven year-hoodoo against England Schoolboys

SCOTLAND haven’t beaten England at senior international level since 1999.

But at least the Scotland Schoolboys have ended their own hoodoo against their neighbours south of the border.

And they had an outstanding performance from an up-and-coming SPFL youth to thank for it.

The Scotland and England Schoolboy matches are an annual tradition involving players aged under 18.

Both teams played in the Centenary Shield competition alongside the other Home Nations each year.

Northern Ireland won it last year with four wins from four, with Scotland finishing bottom.

But this year could be a whole other story, thanks to a stunning start from the Scots with a thumping 6-2 win.

Scotland warmed up for the Auld Enemy clash with games against Stirling Albion, Australia and St Cadocs Under-20s.

The beat Stirling 4-2 before earning a draw against the Aussies and claimed a 6-1 win over St Cadocs at the start of February.

This year’s squad was selected through three regional trials, a final national trial and with eyes on several Scottish Youth Cup matches.

The youth academies of SPFL clubs Alloa, Ayr United, Bonnyrigg Rose, Dunfermline, Falkirk, Hibs, Kilmarnock, Montrose, Partick Thistle, Ross County and Spartans are all represented.

But it was a starlet from the Morton youth system that lit up the score sheet.

Morton have a trio of players in the squad and the match against England was played at their home ground, Cappielow Park.

Cameron Keay was the man of the moment on the day with FOUR of the six goals.

Keay, who played as a box-to-box midfielder when he was younger, has been converted into a striker at the Ton and showed his killer instinct to help the Dark Blues inflict one of the worst defeats on the English in recent years.

The Morton striker opened the scoring after nine minutes and doubled his and Scotland’s account for the day four minutes later.

England pulled one back through George Lycett on 20 minutes with a shot from distance but Keay was on hand again to re-establish the two-goal cushion and in the process bag a superb first-half hat-trick.

Jack Allan of Ayrshire’s Grange Academy, who is currently on loan at Troon from Ayr United, added a fourth after half-time.

Liam Higgins scored for England to make it 4-2 but Ross County’s Torran Lambie headed home just before the hour mark for Scotland’s fifth of the afternoon.

Keay then popped up again with five minutes remaining to get on the score sheet for a fourth time.
