Lee Chin makes major decision on Wexford future before vowing to help county

LEE CHIN has confirmed he will go again with Wexford’s hurlers in 2026.

The Faythe Harriers man scored 3-56 for Keith Rossiter’s men this summer but the Leinster round-robin defeat to Dublin ultimately saw them fail to progress to the knockouts on the head-to-head rule.

The Wexford legend says he’s determined to drive the county forward during a crucial period of transition

Chin, who made his SHC debut for the Models in 2013, turns 33 in October.

Wexford lost stalwarts Matthew O’Hanlon, Diarmuid O’Keeffe and Liam Óg McGovern to retirement ahead of this year’s campaign but their star man is going nowhere.

The 2019 Leinster SHC winner said: “I’m sitting off in Portugal here now looking out at a golf course and a few lads putting on a green across from me and it looks very appetising.

“But hey, look, I do plan to go back next year, yes, and at this stage in my career, I’ll just take it year by year.

“I was happy how this year went for me, how the body was and how the mind was, so, yeah.

“Wexford will be there. It was there before I was there and it’ll be there long after I’m gone.

“I still want to be there to help the cause.

“I want to be there to try and win, I want to feel that success again like we did in 2019.”

Chin knows Wexford are in transition but is confident they can rise again if young blood has an impact and older heads stick around for the cause.

He added: “We’re in a position where we need to unearth some young players but we need to hold on to what we have also.

“We’ve had a lot of retirements over the last couple of years. I suppose with guys finishing up, we’re in some form of a transition.

“At the start of my career, I came into a panel where Wexford were probably in transition. It’s looking similar.

“You’d be hoping that everyone will stay together and try and drive the thing on.

“Every team is looking for young lads. That’s the key to success in any county that’s winning. It’s the young lads that are coming through and keeping the competition and the standards high.

“At the moment, we need more young lads putting their hand up in Wexford. And they’re there, we just need to give them opportunities.”
