Ex-Nigerian footballer JJ Okocha has waded in on the debate about claims by Jamie Carragher that the African Cup of Nations has no value compared to other continental tournaments played around the world.
Jamie Carragher has come under immense criticism for downplaying the relevance of AFCON while discussing Mohammed Salah’s splendid season and his chances of winning the Ballon Dor.
He has been criticized by Africa’s football greats who competed in the AFCON and hold it in high esteem.
JJ Okocha who captained the Nigerian National Team at some point in his career, has added his voice to the criticism.
For him, Jamie Carragher must be overlooked as he has no achievement in the game of football.
“There are some players that will say some things. You just overlook them. If you look at their career and the type of football that they played you can understand. I mean you won’t want your son to be like Carragher. So he can never appreciate African football or the talents that come from Africa”, he said.
