Washington, March 25, 2025 – Russia and Ukraine have finally agreed to stop attacks in the Black Sea, ending months of speculation. White House confirmed this historic decision in statement Tuesday, following U.S.-led mediation—Aljazeera report.

Both nations pledged to halt hostilities, withdraw military forces and ensure safe passage for ships.
The breakthrough came after talks in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump. Government representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S. attended, though Moscow and Kyiv delegates avoided direct meetings.
Washington acted as mediator negotiating separately with both sides. After intense discussions Putin and Zelensky’s teams reached this landmark agreement.
White House statement highlighted that both parties committed to ending Black Sea clashes. Commercial ships won’t face military interference, though no start date for implementation was specified.
Russia also secured promises of support for exporting agricultural goods and fertilizers if the deal holds. Reduced shipping insurance costs and easier access to ports and payment systems were also assured.
However, Ukraine’s administration, led by Zelensky, issued a firm warning: any movement of Russian naval ships in the Black Sea will be considered a violation of the agreement. Putin’s administration has yet to comment officially.
This isn’t the first attempt at peace in the region. In 2022, Turkey brokered a similar Black Sea ceasefire. Russia agreed then to allow commercial shipping, expecting Europe to lift sanctions in return. When those promises fell through, the Kremlin withdrew from the deal in 2023.

For now hope rests on this U.S.-mediated truce. If successful it could ease tensions and revive trade routes critical to both nations and beyond. Details on enforcement and timelines remain unclear leaving observers cautiously optimistic.
