John Goodman’s on-set injury was a huge shock for his costars, including Tom Cruise, who has been going out of his way to offer help and support as the King Ralph star recovers. A source exclusively tells Closer that after the 72-year-old suffered a hip injury, “They shut down production to give John time to recover and that is no surprise, because Tom is an executive producer on this and he always puts the well-being of the actors first.”
“He’s very big on that and on everything being done by the book on his sets so as soon as John hurt his hip everything stopped,” the source adds.
The Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed project is the latest producing endeavor for the Mission: Impossible star, 62, who has been consistently working at a break-neck pace for decades. The source notes that despite having up to six movies in the works, Tom isn’t pushing things with this particular shoot and giving his costar all the time he needs.
The film, which is set to release in October 2026, stars John alongside Jesse Plemons, Sandra Huller, and Riz Ahmed. The synopsis states it follows the story of “the most powerful man in the world” who “causes a disaster and embarks on a mission to prove that he is the savior of humanity,” but there’s been precious little information besides that released about the upcoming movie.
Earlier in March, a spokesperson for Warner Bros. announced the Roseanne star “received immediate medical attention that led to a brief delay in shooting to allow him time to recover,” after suffering an injury on set, though exact details haven’t been made public. The Sun reported, “a leading male cast member,” who has now been identified as John, required hospitalization after an accident. Regardless of what happened, it doesn’t seem to be too severe, as, “Apparently, John is on the mend and things will be back up and running very soon,” the insider continues, “but as per usual, Tom is going way over the top to make him feel better.”
“He’s got his best doctors treating him including his personal physical therapist, and they’re all making house calls. On top of that he’s got his chef preparing all these healthy meals for John and having them delivered every day. Tom is very full on but it’s incredibly sweet and John is very touched to be getting the A-list treatment like this from Tom.”
While John is certainly enjoying his upcoming film’s executive producer taking so much care with his situation, the unfortunate accident came shortly after The Connors star lost his home in the January wildfires that tore through the Los Angeles area.
John’s Pacific Palisades home was left nothing more than a pile of debris after being caught up in the blaze. According to People, he and wife Beth split their time between their Southern California home and a house in New Orleans before the fire shook up their lives. John listed the Louisiana mansion for $5.5 million shortly following the blaze.
