When Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck went their separate ways the first time, we were heartbroken. But then Bennifer 2.0 came to an end, and we all kind of just expected it this time around. After the couple filed for divorce in August of 2024, there were a lot of speculations about what made them come to this decision. Now, months after their divorce, Ben Affleck is finally opening up about the behind-the-scenes, but let us warn you – if you are looking for juicy details, the actor isn’t going to give you any.

He recently discussed his and Jennifer Lopez’s relationship and separation in the most Ben Affleck way possible. The actor who loves to keep his private life private said a lot of things without saying much of anything.
Ben Affleck on his divorce from Jennifer Lopez

Ben Affleck joined GQ magazine for a heart-to-heart discussion about what’s been going on in his life. During the conversation, he admitted that there is a lot of interest in people wanting to find out the “root cause” behind a breakup, but if he is being completely honest, things are just not as simple as people might expect them to be.
He stated, “I guess there’s a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something. But honestly, like I said, the truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting.”
Basically, what Affleck is trying to say is that the reason behind breakups is usually more mundane and unremarkable than what people would assume. Not every relationship ends with an explosion. Some flames just slowly die down.
He added that there is “no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue,” and it’s just two people trying to figure out their lives and relationships. He told GQ,
The truth is, when you talk to somebody, ‘Hey, what happened?’ Well, there is no: ‘This is what happened.’ It’s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do. And as you get older, this is true for me, I assume it’s true for most people, there is no ‘So-and-so did this’ or ‘This was the big event.’ It’s really, it sounds more like a couple’s therapy session, which—you would tune out of someone else’s couple’s therapy after a while. For one thing, you start going, ‘Okay, clearly this person has got these issues. Clearly they have these issues.’
As for why he does not want to get into the details, Affleck stated that it is all “just sort of embarrassing” and “feels vulnerable.” It looks like The Accountant 2 actor is not going to be the one to spill the tea.
Ben Affleck talks about the documentary he did with his ex-wife

Affleck and Jennifer Lopez starred in the documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, which gives an intimate insight into Lopez’s journey as an artist as well as the former couple’s relationship.
He opened up about what it was like being filmed for the documentary as a celebrity who likes to keep things private. Affleck recalled thinking to himself, “Okay, if I’m going to participate in this, I want to try to do it in an honest way and in a way that’s interesting.”
The actor also added that many celebrities, Lopez included, can handle the fame “more adepty and more adroitly” than him who has always been “a little bit more reserved and private.”
Regardless of him having to put his privacy on the back burner for Lopez, Affleck has made it clear that none of it was something that caused major friction between the two.
He said,
And I think the thing that I said in that documentary or the piece that they used was where I said, ‘You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, “Well, I don’t like going out in the water.”’ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship. And I think it’s important to say that wasn’t the cause of some major fracture. It’s not like you can watch that documentary and go, ‘Oh, now I understand the issues that these two had.‘
As for what he thinks about Lopez now that everything is done and dusted, he made it clear that he has “nothing but respect” for his ex-wife.
The Greatest Love Story Never Told is available to watch on Prime Video.
