Super Mario Odyssey has been out for nearly eight years and yet people are still discovering new secrets today. The game was one of the first post-launch titles for the Nintendo Switch and has since become one of the most iconic and well-received games on the handheld. But it would seem like the game still has some surprises 8 years later.

With 18 unique Kingdoms and nearly 1,000 Moons to collect, the game has a lot of depth and has kept players coming back for more. But what secrets does the game have? Well, players have found Easter eggs, hidden paths, and even unintended methods over the years. Even if you’ve played the game before, there might be some that you don’t know. Especially this new one.
Super Mario Odyssey secrets that you may have missed
1. Pokio Can Destroy Metal Blocks If You Have the Patience
Most players assume that the metal crates found in Bowser’s Kingdom can only be broken by launching bombs at them. But it turns out that the small, seemingly harmless Pokio bird can break these crates by pecking them 200 times in a row.
This was recently re-discovered by players after eight whole years (via GamesRadar). X user @MarioBrothBlog posted a clip of it recently and a different user came up and said that they had actually discovered it back in 2017. We’ve never heard of it till today because it just isn’t a game-breaking finding.
2. Mario Talks About His Favorite Pasta in His Sleep
If you ever leave Mario idle for too long, he will eventually lie down and fall asleep. This small detail has been noticed by many, but what most players miss is the unique dialogue he mutters while dozing off. Depending on the Kingdom he’s in, Mario will sometimes dream about Princess Peach or even his favorite type of pasta.

3. New Donk City’s Secret Theater Tribute
Super Mario Odyssey is filled with references to the franchise’s history and one of the best ones can be found in the Metro Kingdom. Inside New Donk City’s theater, Mario can watch a recreation of the original Super Mario Bros. game on a big screen. It’s this charm that has made the franchise a benchmark for other games.
4. A Hidden T-Rex in the Deep Woods
We all remember capturing the mighty T-Rex in the Cascade Kingdom, but there’s another one lurking where most of us never thought to look. In the Wooded Kingdom, if Mario falls off the main area, he lands in the hidden Deep Woods instead of dying.
Here, we can find another T-Rex to possess, which helps us collect more Power Moons and coins. Not a lot of players found this area since most players instinctively avoid falling off ledges. This has made it one of the game’s most well-hidden secrets.
5. Yoshi’s Secret Home Is a Callback to Super Mario World
Yoshi doesn’t play a major role in Super Mario Odyssey’s main story, but he does make a secret appearance. After completing the game, we can find Yoshi atop Peach’s Castle in the Mushroom Kingdom, just like in Super Mario 64.
What you might not know is that you can visit Yoshi’s home through a painting in the Luncheon Kingdom. And if you see it, we can tell you that it’s a reference to the Star Road secret areas in Super Mario World.
Which of these did you find, if any? Let us know in the comments!
