In an interview with Country Living, Sklenar described Spencer as a man deeply driven by love for his family, willing to do whatever it takes to protect them.

He said,

He’s such a noble character and he lives by a very clear code of ethics that he stands by, and I think that’s such a cool thing — You don’t see a lot of characters like that, that are so driven by just a pure love of family and a protector quality.

However, he also reflected on the darkness the character holds within, hinting that Spencer might take a darker turn in 1923 Season 2. “I mean he’s a scary man when he needs to be and he definitely lets the cat out of the bag a little bit when he needs [to],” he said.

He continued,

He has so much integrity, and his intense integrity is what gives him his resilience. And they go hand in hand, you know? If your why is strong enough, you can pretty much endure anything, and his why is as strong as it gets.

Sklenar also expressed that Spencer’s strong belief in helping others was another reason he was drawn to the role, as he noted, “Some people need help, and if you can help them, you should do that.”

Season 2 of Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 follows Spencer Dutton’s journey back home after he was separated from his wife, Alexandra in the Season 1 finale. Facing numerous obstacles along the way, Spencer has made it as far as West Texas.
