The Mummy 2026 Cast and Release Date: Are Tom Cruise and Brendan Fraser Returning?

The Mummy franchise is not yet dead after New Line Cinema picked up the project with Lee Cronin at the helm. The director is known for his work on Evil Dead Rise, but we’re not sure if we can expect another supernatural horror take on the beloved classic tale.

Brendan Fraser and Tom Cruise usually come to mind when we speak about The Mummy films, but will they be returning? We know the 1999 picture starring Fraser became a cult-classic favorite over time, but Cruise’s reboot failed to hit the mark after his attempt at reviving the action-adventure franchise.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy has begun filming

The Mummy keeps coming back to life as the upcoming revival poises its way for a new iteration. This will be the first installment in the movie series that won’t be distributed by Universal Pictures and evidently will have a new set of cast.

As per Deadline, Irish actor Jack Reynor joined the project in an undisclosed role—and no, he’s not leading the movie. This opens up a possibility that either Brendan Fraser or Tom Cruise could return, but who knows?

The plot remains under wraps, although the Rick O’Connell star has expressed interest in reprising his role. While speaking with Variety, Fraser said, “I don’t know how it would work. But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit.” This is igniting the hope that we might see him once again as the dashing and daring adventurer.

As for Cruise, we’re not exactly sure if the Hollywood veteran would want to do a repeat performance following the backlash his 2017 film endured. It was reported that the actor allegedly wanted to take control of the production, while Fraser criticized the film for being “straight-ahead horror” and lacking the element of fun. He said that it should be a thrilling ride and not a terrifying experience for the viewers.

So far, only Reynor has been announced as part of the cast, with filmmaker Lee Cronin taking the reins. Filming has also begun in Ireland and Spain, with Jason Blum and James Wan serving as producers. It is scheduled for release on April 17, 2026.

Upcoming The Mummy film needs to have the same charm as Brendan Fraser’s movie

The Mummy franchise refuses to rest as evident in the number of times it has been rebooted and revived for the big screen. Fans love the adventure, but the nostalgia effect isn’t enough to sustain a franchise as big as this.

While Fraser’s version of The Mummy received mixed reviews, it stood the test of time because of its engaging story and memorable characters. As the actor said, it’s fun and adventurous that it easily transports viewers back in time.

We wish to see this kind of escapism in the new installment. Hopefully, we learn more details about the new film in the coming months, as production is already on the roll.
