“So she has my back on the biology”: The Only Star in The Big Bang Theory With a Ph.D Was So Smart the Show’s Actual Science Consultant Asked Her For Help

Who doesn’t love jokes? That too, with a hint of science in it. That’s exactly what The Big Bang Theory delivered for 12 long seasons. The sitcom was way ahead of its time, and Chuck Lorre made it a point to make it as accurate as he could. So, he brought in a real-life astrophysicist to fact-check each and every element of the script. This was none other than David Saltzberg.

From what goes on on those whiteboards to the equations that the gang discussed in almost every episode, everything was thoroughly checked. But as the show brought in more topics related to biology and neuroscience, he found help from actress Mayim Bialik, who herself has a very impressive educational background.

When watching a show, it’s very easy to assume that most of what we’re seeing is just something made up for entertainment. This is especially true for shows that throw around some very complex scientific jargon. But The Big Bang Theory made sure that whatever equations or theories were being discussed were real and authentic.

Chuck Lorre even hired a physics professor from UCLA as a consultant to fact-check each and every element in the script. This was David Saltzberg, who had an impressive educational background with a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago and had also worked at CERN. With such a stellar resume, it might seem like fact-checking would be easy for him. But in reality, even he needed extra help sometimes.

While he’s definitely an expert in physics, the show covered more than just that. And as it introduced more topics related to biology and neuroscience, he found himself in need of someone who could fact-check those details. That’s when Mayim Bialik entered the picture with her Ph.D. in neuroscience.

Unlike most actors who had to learn lines to play a scientist, Bialik actually knew what she was saying and doing.

In fact, David Saltzberg himself relied on her when it came to fact-checking biology and neuroscience. He added in an interview via Wired:

Luckily just as they added more neuroscience and biology with the character Amy Farah Fowler, the actress that plays her is Mayim Bialik, and she has a Ph.D. in neuroscience. So she has my back on the biology.

While most shows would rely on consultants for accuracy, The Big Bang Theory had Bialik, who would fact-check scripts from her own expertise. It was this commitment to accuracy that made the sitcom stand out from the rest.

Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch’s Big Bang reunion

Both Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik joined The Big Bang Theory in later seasons, but with their screen presence and storyline, they were quickly added as full-time members. But while the show ended in 2019, the duo still share a very good bond with one another.

And because of this they reunited once again, but this time in an episode of Night Court, and it’s safe to say that it brought back a wave of nostalgia for fans. Bialik guest starred as an exaggerated version of herself in the courtroom of Judge Abby Stone, played by Rauch.

The storyline follows that Stone is a huge Blossom fan and initially showcased a lot of admiration for Bialik. Until she discovered that she might actually be stalking her. On the experience part, Bialik detailed in an interview via Yahoo that she was both excited and sentimental.

She expressed how much she valued her friendship with Rauch and that she was proud of everything she has accomplished since The Big Bang Theory.

Her guest role also had a special meaning for Bialik as she detailed that she has been a huge fan of Night Court since her childhood. But at that time she wasn’t allowed to watch it when it originally aired because it was on too late. And now being a part of it feels surreal to her. Well, the fans obviously loved the duo and their reunion.

You can watch The Big Bang Theory on Max.
