As attractive as Henry Cavill may be to the masses over in DC, the actor has made some seriously questionable choices over the years. Although his record of filmography may be stellar and full of merit, the Justice League star has more than a few skeletons in the closet to contend with.
When it comes to film and television, there are not many who can rise to Cavill’s status, of course. He has embodied some of the most famous and larger-than-life figures of history, ranging from Sherlock Holmes to Superman. However, when it comes to his personal life, the actor remains veritably shrouded in controversy.
Henry Cavill’s questionable dating life
As beloved as a celebrity may be, the public can only strive to know the aspects of their personality that they are willing to put on display on camera. Henry Cavill is no different. His gentlemanly posture, polite conversational etiquette, and British charm immediately put every person in his line of sight at ease.
However, when one cares to dig a little deeper, the cracks in Henry Cavill’s personal life begin to appear glaringly obvious. The Superman actor has never attempted to hide his dating history. Shortly before raising scandal over his relationship with a teenager (he was 32 at the time), Cavill nearly dated a 21-year-old avid animal hunter, Marisa Gonzalo.
In December 2014, reports of Cavill dating Gonzalo began to circulate in and around the industry gossip mills. One tabloid named Celebrity Dirty Laundry reported that the pair had met at the gym and Gonzalo was “using” Cavill for fame, clout, and as a means to climb the social ladder by deliberately leaking pictures of them together on occasions, including one Thanksgiving dinner.
Although there is no valid evidence of Gonzalo orchestrating her relationship with Cavill, the rumors of them dating eventually subsided after a few months.
Henry Cavill remains shrouded in controversy
Almost a year after the rumors of him dating Marisa Gonzalo subsided, Henry Cavill began dating a 19-year-old college freshman student, Tara King, while he was 32 at the time. He reportedly met the art history student at a London nightclub in 2015, and by then, Cavill was already a well-known figure in Hollywood due to his celebrity from the DCEU films.
In an interview with Elle Magazine in 2016, Cavill even went as far as to justify and validate their relationship despite the problematic age gap, saying:
People say, ‘Age is just a number.’ A lot of times it’s not just a number. It’s actually a real and true sign of someone’s maturity. But in this case, she’s fantastic. When I met my girlfriend, I was super intimidated. I wanted to impress her. I was thinking, ‘Don’t mess this up, man.’
Their relationship did not pass the test of time, however. Hollywood has more than a few celebrity power couples with an astonishing age gap, ranging from Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones (who are 25 years apart) to Beyoncé and Jay Z (12 years apart).
However, the key factor in these relationships has always been the agreeable age of consent, which is not a factor one posits as a teenager.
