One Supernatural Episode Took Body Horror to the Extreme by Carving Sigils Into Dean’s Skeleton – But It Created Massive Continuity Errors

Supernatural follows the monster-hunting escapades of the Winchester brothers and ran for fifteen seasons. As a result, the series developed its own intricate lore and mythology, which allowed the brothers to fight all kinds of supernatural foes.

At the same time, the series maintained a horror aesthetic, especially during the earlier seasons with creator Eric Kripke as the showrunner. During one early episode of the series, the concept of body horror was stretched a little too thin with the introduction of one kind of sigil.

While the basic concept of the sigils itself was very disturbing, it opened a whole new can of worms as the series expanded beyond the original five-season plan. As a result, it created several inconsistencies in the overall story, and here is everything you need to know about it.

One Supernatural episode took body horror to extreme lengths with Dean

Supernatural ran for fifteen seasons and has an expansive monster-hunting lore that was slowly built to facilitate the adventures of Sam and Dean Winchester. In the show’s fifth season, showrunner Eric Kripke introduced the concept of the Enochian Sigils in the premiere episode.

In the episode, Castiel carves the sigils onto Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki‘s characters. The nature of the sigils pushed the boundaries of body horror in the series as its truly disturbing nature is depicted first-hand in the following episode, titled Good God, Y’All!

During their visit to a hospital, the brothers realize that the sigil has been carved into their ribs. As a result, neither angels nor demons can track them, including Castiel. While the sigils being carved aren’t shown on screen, the image of Sam and Dean seeing the latter’s X-ray is truly disturbing, especially knowing what’s at stake for the brothers with Lucifer’s impending arrival.

The Enochian Sigils created massive continuity errors in Supernatural

Although the Enochian Sigils were introduced early in season 5 and played an important role in the battle against Lucifer, they were hardly ever mentioned in the later episodes, with inconsistencies when other angels and demons track the brothers.

On Reddit, the show’s fans also discussed the inconsistent nature of the sigils since they most likely remained carved on the Winchester brothers’ chests in the later seasons.

From the fan comments, it is evident that there were several inconsistencies created because of the sigils, especially in the later seasons when several angels are able to track down the Winchesters.

Furthermore, there hasn’t been a canon mention of Castiel undoing the sigils, which makes the matter even more confusing. The later episodes established that sigils could be bypassed by dreamwalking, as a means to reduce their effect. Therefore, most fans seemed to agree that the sigils simply withered with time and got weaker, explaining the inconsistencies.

Supernatural is streaming on Netflix.
