Guillermo del Toro has delivered several critically and commercially successful movies in his expansive career. However, del Toro is known for having a slew of scrapped projects that never made it to production.
One of the filmmaker’s best ideas was Silver, a story he had cooked up very early in his career, yet it languished in development hell. According to sources and del Toro himself, the film would’ve been shot in Mexico.

Furthermore, the story would’ve revolved around a Mexican wrestler taking on politicians who are vampires. With del Toro’s ability to extract emotion from the most absurd concepts and inhuman characters, the proposed film sounds like an absolute treat and I need him to work on it asap.
Guillermo del Toro’s Silver is arguably one of his best unrealized ideas
Guillermo del Toro is known for his unconventional storytelling sensibilities, which often mix his personal experiences with his love for the occult and horror. Del Toro has seen the most success in his career when combining these elements. That’s why it is such a shame that Silver, a project in a similar vein, hasn’t materialized.

During an interview with The Guardian in 2015, del Toro opened up about his plans for future projects, having just delivered one of his biggest commercial hits in Pacific Rim. Although the report described the project as Silva, del Toro confirmed that it was titled Silver (via X).
The director suggested that his next movie would be a smaller project, which he planned to film in black and white. He explained that his story for the film would’ve revolved around a Mexican luchador wrestler who discovered that all politicians are vampires.
If the face-off between a lucha libre and political vampires wasn’t enough, del Toro revealed that the story was a casualty of his family leaving Mexico after his father’s kidnapping. Therefore, a uniquely absurd concept driven by del Toro’s personal experiences sounds like the perfect recipe for a good movie, and it’s a shame things did not materialize.
Guillermo del Toro may have already explained why he never made Silver
Although del Toro had suggested in the interview that he planned to start filming Silver sometime around 2016. However, the Academy Award-winning director hasn’t revealed why the project has languished in development hell.

During an interview with Ain’t It Cool in 2006, del Toro revealed that he had originally conceived the film in the early 1990s. However, the filmmaker confirmed that he had yet to finish the screenplay in almost thirteen years by that point.
I’ve been stuck on page 60 of a screenplay called Silver for 13 years, and it’s essentially about an old masked wrestler who becomes a bodyguard to a group of politicians in Mexico.
Del Toro made the above statement, suggesting that despite intending to make the movie, he had yet to crack the screenplay.
Furthermore, in both interviews, del Toro expressed his desire to shoot a movie in Mexico. However, given that del Toro no longer spends a majority of his time in his native land, it might’ve been difficult for him to get the script’s cultural aspects right. Despite the struggles, the concept remains fascinating, and I would argue it is time del Toro revisited it soon.
