And the venue was once home to the Metropolitan Cocktail Bar and Restaurant which closed down in September after 20 years in business.

Tim Martin’s Wetherspoons is now reportedly in talks with Merchant Square to take over the unit, GlasgowWorld reports.

Representatives of the company have made several visits to the site on Candleriggs over the last month.

If the takeover goes ahead, it would be the sixth Wetherspoons pub in the city.

There are already branches in Jamaica Street, George Square, Sauchiehall Street, Argyle Street and West George Street.

Metropolitan first opened its doors in 2002 and had gone on to become one of the most popular bars in Merchant City.

Up to 40 staff are said to have lost their jobs as a result of the closure.

The bar’s owner, Kevin McGuire, said he had “no choice” but to close after the business was hammered by constant pressures from the cost-of-living crisis to rising rent and energy bills.

Bosses at Merchant Square said at the time that Metropolitan had been “integral” to Glasgow’s hospitality scene.

Julie Edwin, spokesperson for Merchant Square, said: “Metropolitan has been a tenant at Merchant Square for many years and an integral part of the Glasgow cocktail and dining scene, contributing to Merchant Square’s unique identity.

“Merchant Square has been going through a number of changes in recent months, welcoming vibrant new tenants to the Square as we respond to what customers now want.

“We therefore look forward to continuing to embrace and welcome new operators to Merchant Square as the offer continues to grow and evolve.”

It comes after a Scottish Wetherspoons branch was named the UK’s “most loved” boozer.

To celebrate its 20th birthday, researchers at Google Maps compiled a list of the pubs that have captured the hearts of the nation.

The popular Standing Order on Edinburgh’s George Street took the top spot.

A Wetherspoons spokesperson said: “We are delighted that The Standing Order has been named as a top pub.

“The recognition should go to the staff who work hard to make the pub so popular.”
