The movie in question, of course, is Ready Player One. Based on Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name, it follows the story of an orphan teen, Walter Watts (Tye Sheridan), and his desire to own the virtual reality universe OASIS.
OASIS’ creator posthumously starts a contest through pre-recorded messages through his avatar on the platform, the winner of which would be granted the rights to ownership of it.
The movie is a blend of genres, with elements of horror, mystery, fantasy, and science fiction all morphed into one to create a movie that broke boundaries at every turn. Moreover, the film also featured some of the most iconic sequences from older classics through the game that shapes the very premise of the movie.
With Spielberg’s expert direction to steer Ready Player One properly, the movie’s success was not really a surprise. As such, many fans have been wondering if there will ever be a sequel to this movie. Especially since it’s been seven years since its release.
As per Showbiz 411, Spielberg revealed last year that there is indeed a sequel in the work, with the filmmaker limiting his role as a producer in the film. However, no further updates are yet available. As such, fans have been growing restless about its future recently.

Any official updates either by Steven Spielberg or the other parties involved in the Ready Player One sequel are yet to come out. However, a Movieweb report noted that there are chances of its production starting in 2025.
The reason behind that is that since 2024 was Spielberg’s rare year of free time that he spent on “discoveries”, there is a high chance that the legendary director might get back on track with the movie this year.
A recent discussion on X, following Culture Crave’s post commemorating 7 years of Spielberg’s underrated gem, earned interesting reactions from fans. With many expressing their frustrations and excitement about the upcoming movie at the same time.

As things stand, it might not be too long before a proper update on the Ready Player One sequel hits social media. However, only time will tell whether it comes from Steven Spielberg or somewhere else.
