Dante vs. Vergil: Will Netflix’s Devil May Cry Lay the Groundwork for Their Epic Rivalry?

Few rivalries are as iconic as the one between the sons of Sparda, Dante, and Vergil. Whenever the brothers meet each other in the Devil May Cry franchise there is bound to be a high-octane fight with a lot of stabbing. Devil May Cry 1 did it, Devil May Cry 3 did it, and Devil May Cry 5 followed suit.

But will Netflix and Adi Shanker’s new series continue this tradition? Will the Sparda brothers continue to have such “warm family reunions” (as Dante says in DMC 5)? Or will Adi Shankar go a completely different route?

Well, we are pretty sure that almost every OG Devil May Cry is dying for another bout, but guess we’ll just have to wait patiently.

Not your typical sibling rivalry

The legendary dark knight of Hell, Sparda, defeated Mundus and his army and settled down with a human named Eva. He had two sons, twins rather, with her, and named them Dante and Vergil.

After Sparda was trapped by Mundus and Eva was killed, the brothers had to fend for themselves, and their experiences shaped them into what they are today.

While both of them experienced the same trauma, they processed it in different ways. Dante hated his father and embraced his human side, while Vergil hated his weakness and embraced the demon inside him (DMC 5 was almost entirely about this).

Vergil constantly strives to improve himself so that no one can ever take anything from him again, and this hunger for power (he needs MORE POWER, if you know you know) sometimes puts him at odds with his little brother, Dante.

The Devil May Cry video games do an excellent job of developing the brothers and showing that their rivalry is not the result of some petty accident. It’s something that developed and grew over time due to their differing philosophies.

As mentioned above, Vergil is all about embracing the blood of his father that runs through him, and hence, in Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, he tries to open a portal to the demon realm.

When Dante tries to oppose him, Vergil fights Dante, leading to their initial confrontation.

The brothers even differ in the way they carry themselves, and we love Devil May Cry for being so detailed about it. Dante has this nonchalant attitude to him, while Vergil is calculated and composed. Dante survives mostly on pizza and doesn’t care about hygiene, while Vergil is the total opposite.

So are Dante and Vergil friends now?

All these differences between the brothers, from their philosophies to their lifestyles, go a long way in developing their rivalry. While they did reconcile at the end of Devil May Cry 5 (at least that’s what Capcom made us think), no other rivalry will be as unique as theirs.

Will the new Devil May Cry series continue this rivalry?

With Netflix and Adi Shankar announcing the new Devil May Cry animated series, and with the trailer giving us our first look at Vergil, it is quite obvious that he will have a role to play in this series.

Based on the trailer, we can decipher the magnitude of his role in the series, and based on what Adi Shankar (who is a huge DMC nerd, by the way) has said about Vergil, we can figure out how he will be portrayed.

As seen in the trailer for the series, White Rabbit seems to be wielding the power of the perfect amulet to open a portal to the demon realm. His lines, “Here we stand at the threshold of a new age, the age of demons,” suggest that he will open the portal to the demon realm.

Now, if this sounds familiar to fans of the series, then allow us to remind you that this is exactly what Vergil wanted to do in DMC 3.

The perfect amulet can only be achieved when the amulets of both Vergil and Dante are combined. And as we know, Vergil ain’t the guy to just hand over his amulet to someone.

Hence, we predict that Vergil will be one of the antagonists of the series and that he will be working with White Rabbit, just as he had worked with Arkham in DMC 3 (can we get a JACKPOT on that prediction?)

The reason for this might be because Vergil wants, you guessed it, POWER. This will lay the groundwork for the rivalry between Dante and Vergil in this universe, much like the games.

Adi Shankar says Vergil’s not a villain but an anti-hero. Do you agree? Do you think he’ll do justice to Vergil in ASDMC?

We also speculate that Adi Shankar might slightly tweak Vergil’s portrayal in his universe, perhaps making him a kind of anti-hero that people can relate to. We say this because he saw Vergil’s actions on X by calling him an anti-hero.

He stated that Vergil’s actions are rooted in logic and that he thinks that Vergil is more of an anti-hero than a villain.

While several fans have disagreed with this statement, we think that it is quite an interesting take on Vergil. The take is rooted in logic (see what we did there?), and we would love to see how this would affect the bond between the Sparda brothers.

Devil May Cry will be available to stream on Netflix from 3 April 2025.
