Lauren Graham Addresses Chances of Another ‘Gilmore Girls’ Revival

Lauren Graham is aware that Gilmore Girls fans want another revival series — but acknowledged it’s not an easy task to accomplish.

“How do you honor those people who have kept [Gilmore Girls] alive?” Graham, 57, asked host Dax Shepard on the Monday, March 10, episode of his “Armchair Expert” podcast. “Is it giving them more? Is it doing what Reese Witherspoon is doing with Legally Blonde, Elle the prequel? Is this a Captain Marvel multiverse where you wanna follow whoever? Or do you try to go back?”

Gilmore Girls ran for seven seasons on the WB from 2000 to 2007. The show starred Graham as Lorelai and Alexis Bledel as her daughter Rory. Nine years after the series finale, the drama was revived for a miniseries on Netflix titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. For Graham, coming back to the series after nearly a decade was a rewarding experience.

“For me, it was an incredibly satisfying, beautiful, cried every day experience,” she reflected. “I could mark some growth I felt I had in terms of that character, that time. Working with [creator] Amy [Sherman-Palladino]. It felt different so all the stuff I love about it was the same but it was better and different than a more grown-up version.”

Graham has seemingly thought about how to continue the beloved WB series, since she had an idea of how they can proceed with the narrative.

“I always say — it’s not me trying to get out of the question — it is literally what I could picture given everyone’s lives and schedules is [a] Christmas movie,” she said. “Because that’s what I think the Brits do so well with their beloved shows … You get the Christmas special. It’s not [multiple] episodes but it’s seeing all your friends together again.”

Graham added that the idea of having the cast reunite for a special holiday moment did well when she and costar Scott Patterson — who play Graham’s love interest Luke — joined forces for a WalMart commercial last year. The actress shared that she thought it was “a sweet ‘where are they now?’ thing” for the pair’s characters.”

However, Graham acknowledged that if Gilmore Girls was going to do another revival it faces a challenge, especially with how the Netflix revival ended. (Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life ended on a cliffhanger where Rory revealed to Lorelai that she is pregnant.)

“The problem is where we left the characters, well not the problem,” she said. “Now Luke and Lorelai got married, Rory is maybe having a baby. It’s not necessarily going to be the two of us circling the gazebo.”

Graham added that in order for the show to have another life “it just can’t be the same,” which is why she thinks a holiday catchup would be the best bet.

While Graham is grateful that the decision is not in her hands, she said if she gets the call for another revival she’ll “do it.”
