Alan’s husband Karl Broderick’s dad Patrick sadly passed away last month on February 11.
Following the heartbreaking death, Alan was then diagnosed with diverticulitis.
The often painful disease is caused by small pouches forming in the wall of the colon, known as diverticula.
Although the exact cause of diverticular disease is still unknown, it mostly affects people over the age of 40 and causes a range of digestive symptoms – such as bloating and stomach pains.
The 61-year-old took to Instagram yesterday and said: “Back on @irelandamvmtv tomorrow after a s***y week.
“[I was] away for a few days after Karl’s dad’s passing and ended up in hospital with diverticulitis, I’d never even heard of it.
“And now chatting about it I can’t believe the amount of people who have it or know someone who has.”
Alan asked his fans to comment if they “ever had it”, to let him know what they ate and give him some “recovery” tips.
The popular presenter’s friends and fans flooded the comment section with love and support.
Audrey wrote: “Would love to know more about it… sending love.”
Emily commented: “Oh god Alan, sending love to you both.”
Rebecca added: “Thinking of you & Karl. And God love you Alan with the diverticulitis, I know that’s not easy, hope it settles for you very soon, look after yourself.”
STAR’S GRIEF
Sherna added: “So sorry to hear this Alan, my condolences to you both. Hope you’re doing ok.”
Another fan commented: “I’m so sorry for both your loss that was a total shock. Oh my god that condition is horrendous. I have family who suffer from it.”
Alan had previously revealed the passing of his beloved father-in-law over on Instagram with a sweet post.
He shared a photo of Paddy smiling and said: “It’s always sad to say goodbye and this week we said goodbye to @karlbroderick and @annbrodericks_ dad Paddy.
“May he rest in peace.”
