Dozens of flights cancelled at Dublin Airport amid 24-hour walkout at top German airports

IRISH passengers are facing travel disruption to and from Dublin Airport amid a 24-hour walkout in top German airports.

It comes as German workers in 13 airports across the country are participating in strike action.

The Ver.di service workers union walkout began on Sunday in Hamburg Airport, and prompted subsequent walkouts in other major airports such as Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin.

A strike was announced on Friday by the union but they told German media outlets the abrupt walk out was “necessary”.

A spokesperson for Ver.di told DW: “The walkout was necessary so that the impact of the strike could really be felt.”

The union is in an ongoing battle over working conditions and wages for public sector and transport workers.

Demands of an 8 per cent pay increase, additional time off and higher bonuses have so far been rejected by employers as unaffordable.

Talks are set to resume on the pay dispute on Friday in Potsdam but there are fears of further strike action before then.

In a statement posted to passengers on their website, Aer Lingus advised customers those impacted would be contacted directly.

They said: “Planned industrial action at a number of German airports on Monday 10th March will impact operations to and from Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf.

“Impacted customers are being contacted directly to offer alternative travel options and will be further notified directly of any flight cancellations.”

The airline also outlined steps passengers can take if they are worried about their flights, including:

  • Check your flight status for the latest updates.
  • Check information on the operation of your departure airport – Airports by Region
  • If your booking was made through a third party (such as a travel agent, online agency, or another airline), please be aware that they may receive flight status updates on your behalf.

In Frankfurt Airport 1,054 of 1,116 flights in and out of the airport have been cancelled.

Aer Lingus offers direct flies from and to the airport from Dublin Airport.

Hamburg Airport have said no departures will be possible from their location.

Both Aer Lingus and Ryanair fly to the city.

And all regular flights from Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport have been cancelled as a result of the strike action.

Again, both Aer Lingus and Ryanair operate flights to and from the location.

Other impacted locations across Germany include Cologne/Bonn, Leipzig/Halle Dusseldorf, Dortmund, Stuttgart Munich Weeze and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden.
