But now one interior designer has taken to TikTok to reveal which popular choices will make your home look ”cheap” – and there’s an overused flooring you may wish to avoid.
The guru, Bilal Rehman, works as a luxury interior designer and according to him, he’s seen plenty of clients make the same mistakes over and over again.
Common flooring
One of the biggest trends that Bilal (@bilalrehmanstudio) reckons makes ”your house look like a piece of s**t” is covering every room in grey wood flooring.
The whizz brutally said in his video: ”Builders put this in every single home that they make.
”It looks super basic, it sucks the life out of any space that you have.”
What’s more, not only will your home look like a carbon copy of every other house on the market, the expert warned that the common flooring will also ”devalue” the property.
According to Bilal, from the US, he will end up ”ripping it up” with his team a whopping ”nine out of ten times” – so it’s best to ”avoid it from the beginning”.
Furniture sets
The luxury interior designer also begged his 587k followers on the page to stop snapping up whole furniture sets.
Although this might make decorating your home easier, Bilal said there should be ”no reason why your nightstand, dresser, bed, every single piece in your room matches”.
He explained: ”It just makes your room feel like you went to one store and bought everything.”
Having identical style pieces in one space, Bilal added, won’t do anything to make your home ”feel designer” or ”high-end”.
Instead, he advised to chose just one piece from the collection you like and ”stick with that”.
Mass-produced artwork
B&M, B&Q and other popular stores are packed to the brim with purse-friendly artwork – however, as Bilal explained, it’s all ”mass-produced” and will make your living room look exactly the same as your neighbour’s.
”You can easily find some really unique pieces from a local artist or Etsy – or even make something yourself.”
In the long run, he added, you will get a lot more out of your money purchasing an original piece of art that not everyone in the local area has.

While plenty of people, including fellow interior pros, agreed with the tips, others flooded to hit back at the expert.

Someone else chimed in: ”Growing up I thought matching furniture sets was a pinnacle of wealth lol.”
Another, meanwhile, wrote: ”i hate when furniture are miss matched.”
