Four top dog grooming tips to make your pooch Crufts-worthy

IF you’ve been inspired by the perfect pooches at Crufts this week, it could be time to spruce up your own mutt.

Your pup may not reach best-in-show standard, but they’ll be top dog to you.

We have four doggy grooming tips to make your pooch Crufts-worthy[/caption]

Here are our top tips . . .

BATHTIME: Washing a dog too much can strip their coat of those natural oils.

A bath every couple of months is usually enough.

Brush the coat first to remove any tangles.

Wet the coat a bit at a time to get the dog used to it, then foam up with a special dog shampoo, massaging it in thoroughly.

Wash off all the bubbles then towel-dry or use a hairdryer on a cool setting.

ROOM TO GROOM: A visit to the groomer’s can be pricey, with an average cost of £40 to £50 per session.

But you can save money by learning to do the basics at home.

Online videos can give you great tips.

Simple brushing twice a week can make a big difference.

It helps to distribute natural oils and gives you the chance to check for any skin problems.

Different dogs require different grooming techniques.

Check out the guides to short, medium and long-haired breeds at thekennelclub.org.uk.

HIT YOUR STROKE: You can pamper your dog even if they’re not keen on being brushed or bathed.

Setting aside time each day for a stroking session will put a spring in their step and help them feel more like being groomed.

Gently run your hands over the legs and ears, and lift their paws — but only if they don’t object — before building up over the coming days to a gentle brush.

End each grooming with a doggy treat.

FACE FACTS: Some dogs don’t like it if you wash their face, so take a cue from your own dog’s body language.

If they’re OK with it, try dabbing their eyes and the outside of their ears using a damp cloth to gently wipe away dirt.

Brushing their teeth regularly is important to prevent decay.
