Alexandra Daddario Told a FRIENDS Star That Being a Movie Actor Was Superior That She Still Regrets Today: “I’m still embarrassed”

Alexandra Daddario once made a rookie mistake — telling a FRIENDS alum that movie actors were simply better. Now, she still regrets it. Young and overconfident, she had no idea how the industry really worked. Years later, she cringes at the memory, realizing how wrong (and unintentionally rude) she sounded.

Hollywood doesn’t play favorites between TV and film, and Daddario has learned that the hard way. Safe to say, she won’t be making that mistake again.

Alexandra Daddario once put her foot in her mouth — big time. Back when she was just starting out, she made a bold claim about movie actors being superior to TV actors. The problem? FRIENDS star Christina Applegate was sitting right next to her.

During an interview with Elle, Daddario alluded:

A lot of things. I don’t even want to say it…I was way new in the business, and I was sitting in the hair and makeup trailer, and I was talking about … making it seem like there was a difference between TV and movie actresses and, like, being a movie actress was better or something.

Applegate, a TV veteran with Married… With Children, Samantha Who?, and Dead to Me under her belt, quickly shut that down. Daddario recalled in the same interview,

Christina Applegate was sitting next to me, and she was like, that’s not true, basically, but I was humiliated, because I was like, ya know, 23 years old [saying] ‘being in a movie is better than being on TV’ to someone who’s, like, part of some of the best television in the world…I still think about it. I’m still embarrassed by it.

Daddario has since built a career across both mediums, proving her own point wrong. She starred in Mayfair Witches, earned an Emmy nod for The White Lotus, and landed major film roles.

Still, she’s battled one persistent rumor: that she’s not a good actress. She told Elle, pushing back on the claim.

I’m not a bad actress…I’ve just done some projects that don’t showcase me in the way that I should be showcased, okay?…[The] director and the writing is everything, and sometimes I’m lit poorly, but I’m not a bad actress. I got an Emmy nomination. How do you think I did that?

Daddario lost that Emmy to her White Lotus co-star Jennifer Coolidge, but she’s clearly not sweating it. One thing she is sweating? That awkward Applegate moment.

Alexandra Daddario filmed Mayfair Witches while pregnant — even the horror scenes

Alexandra Daddario didn’t just cast spells in Mayfair Witches; she did it while pregnant. Filming season 2 in 2023, she admitted she had concerns. Daddario alluded (People),

There were some horror scenes where I was like, ‘I don’t know if I should let myself get worked up emotionally because the baby will feel it in my belly!’

The White Lotus star also reflected on her Hollywood journey. Unlike many in the industry, she wasn’t a nepo baby. She shared,

My parents were both lawyers. I was raised in New York under the assumption that you went to college, then became a lawyer or a doctor or worked at a hedge fund…She [Her Mother] knew nothing about acting.

Acting started as an extracurricular activity before she booked her first soap. That hustle paid off. The White Lotus was her game-changer, and Mayfair Witches is her latest magic trick.

Off-screen, she and husband Andrew Form welcomed their first child in 2024. A new season, a new role — both on and off set.
