“He’ll be our McGuffin”: The Fan-favorite MCU Character Everyone Wanted to Return Will Reportedly Play a Crucial Role in Avengers 5 and 6

With the Russo brothers returning for Avengers 5 and 6, which will star Robert Downey Jr as the cinematic giant’s next big bad, fans have been going wild with theories, given the lack of information about the two releases. Although it can’t be said for certain what direction the multiversal battle will take, per reports, we might be eyeing another McGuffin quest.

But unlike the Endgame duology, the reported concept of the upcoming duology isn’t a McGuffin quest in the typical sense, as instead of Infinity Stones, it’ll apparently involve Tom Hiddleston’s Loki.

While the multiversal saga has been a mixed bag for the MCU, as most of the entries have done little to progress the overall story, and the releases itself has been underwhelming for the most part, this wasn’t the case with Loki. Not only does Loki prove to be one of the better MCU entries, but the two seasons also heavily advanced the overall narrative of the multiversal chapter.

As for Loki’s future, even though the character earned a pretty poetic conclusion to his story with the glorious purpose, per scooper Alex Perez, Loki will serve as the McGuffin for Avengers 5 (via The Cosmic Circus).

He’ll be our McGuffin. The race against Doomsday will be a race to see who gets to Loki first.

Although time will tell if this proves to be accurate or not, given Loki’s influence in the multiverse, who is essentially serving as the new timekeeper in the MCU, the possibility doesn’t seem too far-fetched.

Given Marvel’s cinematic-esque approach to the small screen, most post-Endgame shows often seemed like elongated movies. But moving forward, Brad Winderbaum, the Marvel Head of Streaming, TV, and Animation, has assured fans that multiple seasons will be the new norm for Marvel shows, starting with Daredevil: Born Again.

Considering that Tom Hiddleston has entertained the prospect of returning to Loki’s shoes again (via Collider), if his story continues post-Doomsday, another season wouldn’t be too far-fetched, especially under Winderbaum.

In terms of scratching the surface, I mean, he’s a character who’s been around for almost 3,000 years, and he represents unpredictability, boundary-crossing, disruption, and the question mark. So I feel like if I ever got a chance to play the character again, there are 1,000 things I haven’t done. He’s constantly changing, as are we all.

With a year away from its planned release, it’ll be interesting to see how the narrative surrounding Doomsday will branch out, especially given the uncertainty surrounding the next mainline faction of Avengers.

Avengers: Doomsday is slated to hit theatres on May 1, 2026.
