Avengers: Doomsday is slowly moving closer to starting production, with a release date for the highly anticipated project set for May next year. The film will mark the return of the Russo brothers as directors, with Robert Downey Jr also returning, albeit in the role of Doctor Doom. As a result, MCU fans have been eager to learn how Downey Jr’s take on the iconic villain will pan out.

According to rumors, a backstory for Doom has already been set in place, which will directly tie into the events of Loki season 1. As a result, Doom’s motivations will likely be directly linked to the multiversal incursions and play into the creation of the setting for Secret Wars. Here are the latest rumors about Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom in the MCU.
The rumoured motivations for Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday revealed
Avengers: Doomsday will mark Robert Downey Jr‘s return to the MCU following the heroic end of his run as Tony Stark / Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame. However, the Oscar-winner will instead be playing a variation of iconic comic book villain Doctor Doom.

As the film gears up to start production soon, a new report from Alex Perez of Cosmic Circus has shed light on Doom’s alleged motivations for the upcoming movie. During a Q&A session, Perez answered a fan question asking about Doom’s motivations and stated the following:
The antagonist who thinks he is the hero, and is pissed at He Who Remains for essentially “silencing” his universe as well as every other universe/timeline that didn’t correspond to the Sacred Timeline.
The report suggests Doom’s motivations will be strongly tied to the events of Loki season 1, which first introduced He Who Remains and his tendency to prune timelines and maintain the Sacred Timeline.
Furthermore, Perez stated that Doom will likely be a flawed individual who views himself as a hero, implying that the character’s complex morality from the comics will carry over into the live-action appearance. However, his motives will lean toward achieving his freedom from He Who Remains and TVA’s machinations with timelines and, in turn, his fate.
Doctor Doom’s rumored motivations could deeply impact Secret Wars
The rumored motivations for Doctor Doom set up interesting possibilities for his appearance in the upcoming Avengers movies, which adapt the Secret Wars event from the comics. The Battleworld will presumably be the setting for at least one of the movies.

Assuming that Doom is motivated by freeing his timeline from the ruthless pruning conducted by the TVA under He Who Remains, he could create Battleworld out of his desire to preserve the multiverse from the incursions threatening to destroy all life.
As a result, Battleworld could be more deeply entwined with Doom’s personality and motives, similar to Thanos and the Infinity Stones in the Infinity Saga. According to the Russo brothers (via Entertainment Tonight), Downey Jr. was personally involved in the creation of Doom’s personality, which makes it interesting to see how this iteration of the character will impact the MCU moving forward.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026.
