Helldivers 2 Has “Massive Plans” to Expand Onto the One Aspect of the Galactic War That Arrowhead Only Did a “Little bit” of in 2024

Helldivers 2 debuted all the way back in February 2024 and immediately became a success thanks to its incredible gameplay and brutal combat against Automatons and Terminids. However, it wasn’t a smooth ride through the year, as the game faced a number of controversies.

Arrowhead Game Studios has learned a lot of lessons and has been keeping a close eye on the community’s demands in Helldivers 2. The team has tons of ideas for future updates, and one of them plans to enhance the RPG aspect of the shooter that was disregarded previously.

Helldivers 2‘s next expansion plan revealed by Arrowhead

Helldivers 2 game director Mikael Eriksson sat down with Polygon and chatted about the game’s development journey and all the lessons Arrowhead has learned so far in the last year. He stated that Arrowhead was shocked by the success Helldivers 2 had managed to achieve and had to scramble to control everything.

During the interview, Eriksson was asked if after a number of updates, and balances, do players still avoid fighting Automatons. They’ve been the bane of existence for many as these robots are quite challenging to fend off against.

Eriksson stated that while gamers do favor fighting some factions, most of their decisions are influenced by what’s happening in a Major Order. Whenever the game spins its narrative on one enemy, players shift their focus as well. It’s this role-playing aspect that Arrowhead wishes to expand upon in the future.

We expanded a little bit on it in 2024, and we have massive plans to expand even more going forward. If we have a Major Order to play against the bugs, we see way more than half of players playing against bugs, then we switch it around to bots or Illuminates or whatever it might be.

Arrowhead is planning to improve Helldiver 2‘s RPG aspects by bringing in more factions that present unique challenges and narrative weight. The developers don’t want all the factions to feel like a carbon copy of each other and want to add more unique aspects to them.

Eriksson takes the example of Jet Bridge, one of the subsets under Automation, that brings new enemy unique units and unique behavior. In the future, gamers can expect to see Arrowhead bringing more changes and variations to each faction in Helldivers 2 to improve roleplay and keep the gameplay loop fresh.

Helldivers 2 might not be coming to Xbox

Back in October 2024, Helldivers 2‘s community manager stated that an Xbox port of the game was in the hands of Sony and Phil Spencer. If both partners believe it could benefit them financially, there might be a port on the cards.

However, reputable industry insider Shpeshal Nick has opened up about the Helldivers 2 port rumors. While he claims that there were discussions earlier, all talks have collapsed, and the port isn’t happening.

This is quite disappointing for all Xbox gamers, as Helldivers 2 on the console would have allowed Arrowhead to reach a completely new segment of players.

Let’s hope both Microsoft and Sony can agree to bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox in the future. It would be a real shame that such a massive hit is still locked to PlayStation and PC players.

With that said, do you think Helldivers 2 needs to expand more on the RPG side? Let us know in the comments below.
