‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Is Missing a Key Detail From Its First Season That Makes the Most Impactful Moments Less Meaningful

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 is doing just about right so far. Although Season 1 completely threw the competition out of the window with how insanely polished it was from tip to toe, it seems like Season 2 is simply trying to maintain that legacy.

Needless to say, the storyline in The Apothecary Diaries is already so goated, even after typically being a Shojo series at heart, that viewers can’t even feel that much of an issue with this new season. However, there’s still one thing that could make Season 2 just as good as the former season, only if the studio added more insert songs, which are lacking a bit here.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 needed those hard-hitting insert songs!

Insert songs in any media always adds an extra layer of sophistication; they are like a second-hand proof of the quality of the production. Even Solo Leveling‘s second season stepped up the game, as they used special soundtracks in some specific hype moments to intensify their impact.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 1 was also an exceptionally bright example of this, but unfortunately, the 2nd season hasn’t left any impression on it yet.

With perfectly blending gorgeous animation and catchy insert songs, The Apothecary Diaries Season 1 showed how Shojo done right. In fact, it’s not like the music was simply good, they were even expertly woven into the narrative, enhancing the emotional impact of each scene. It was in episode 3 and then again, back to back in episodes 9, 12, 19, and 24!

It’s a general formula that always works so well for any media, and that’s mainly why some people are finding Season 2 a bit disappointing. So, what could be the reason behind the lack of insert songs in Season 2? It’s a shame that we are getting stripped of the overall magic of the series.

The possible reasons behind such a lack of insert songs

Although there isn’t any official confirmation on it yet, one can imagine that such a lack of insert songs in The Apothecary Diaries’ second season must be because of issues like budget constraints or whether the creators simply couldn’t find suitable places to fit them in. Maybe it’s a combination of both factors!

If you closely look at the 2nd season’s visuals, it’s clear that they’re not as polished as the first season, and this must suggest that time constraints might be the main culprit behind this. Wouldn’t it have been better if they simply announced a slightly delayed release date, especially since the first season set the bar so high?

After all, insert songs shouldn’t be that much of a burden to the production team anyway. Each anime episode is typically about 20 minutes long, so fitting in a 2-3 minute insert song shouldn’t have been a major problem. It’s a shame that it didn’t happen, and we do hope that it will happen later on. But for now, this absence of insert songs definitely feels like a missed opportunity.

The Apothecary Diaries is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
