Brad Pitt’s acting career started in the late ‘80s when he was only 23. While he loved watching films, he didn’t know anything about the profession. He sat in a few classes which did not make sense to him until he met the late acting coach Roy London. When asked by Backstage how Pitt discovered the director, he said:
I was taking all these odds jobs, and one of them was driving strippers around to bachelor parties. My job was to get them there, get them home, collect the money, play the music, and catch the clothes.
It paid well, and he did it for three months, but he realized it was not going to move his career forward. When he told his boss he wanted to quit, he was asked to come in one last time because he was in a pinch. Pitt agreed, and the woman he assisted turned out to be dating an actor. She said she was also taking acting lessons, and intrigued by the statement, Pitt asked for the name. He went to see London, and the rest is history.
The Fight Club star studied with him for three years, and even when he started getting projects, he still sought help from London. He credits the late director for the career he now enjoys, and with a heartfelt tone, Pitt expressed how much he misses his mentor.
It’s crazy to think that one decision could have led Pitt in another direction. Had he declined his former boss’ request to do one last Sunday duty, he probably would not have this fame and fortune.

He never forgets where he came from as evident in his tribute to London via Acting Magazine: “Roy London changed the way I thought about acting,” he stated. “He taught me how to find truth in every character, no matter how big or small the role.”
Every character Pitt plays on the screen is distinct and nuanced; he already has a natural flair for acting, but it was his formal training that polished and refined it. Authenticity and emotional depth were just some of the things he learned from the acting master, something that he still carries today.
