One traveller shared a video of the incident, which happened around 10am yesterday morning, on social media.
The short clip shows the sewage falling from the ceiling above the seating area at gates 13 and 14.
Large clumps were seen strewn across the ground as liquid continued to pour down and splash on the floor.
A yellow wet floor sign was also spotted sitting in the middle of the mess.
The passenger said they were sitting on the seats opposite the mess when it thundered down and very quickly “the whole place was stinking”.
The video, posted on TikTok, was captioned: “Oh dear!
“Toilet above just exploded, whole lot came down.”
“We were sitting on the seats opposite”.
The poster added in the comments: “It was a bit on the smelly side, but no injuries“.
Many users flocked to the comments as they hit out at airport bosses over the mess.
One person said: “Oh is that what it was! I was at gate 9 ready to board and heard the most almightly clatter!! So glad I didn’t go for a look to see what had happened”.
Another added: “S***** water pouring out the ceiling. You can’t get much worse”.
Someone else quipped: “Great start to your holiday“.
While a fourth wrote: “What a s*** show.”
And a fifth chimed in: “That old saying of ‘being s***’ on from a great height” has never been more true!”
Edinburgh Airport has since confirmed that the building suffered a sewage leak while works were being carried out by a contractor on Monday.
Bosses said that it affected the departures area between gates 13 and 14, according to Edinburgh Live.
A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport told Edinburgh Live: “Work being done by a contractor at the airport has resulted in a sewage leak into an area around gates 13 and 14.
“The area was closed while teams responded and has since reopened.”
Edinburgh Airport has been contacted for comment by the Scottish Sun.
