Supernatural ran for fifteen seasons with a host of monsters, demons, and even literal Gods acting as villains for the Winchester brothers. However, Lucifer remains one of the most beloved and menacing villains in the series, initially played by Mark Pellegrino before fan-favorite Misha Collins portrayed a different iteration.

During an interview, Pellegrino discussed his work on the hit fantasy series, including his and Collins’ performance as Lucifer. The actor revealed that Collins consulted him before playing his iteration of the character, with the duo working together to maintain consistency. Here is what Pellegrino had to say about training Collins to play Lucifer in Supernatural.
Mark Pellegrino helped Misha Collins play Lucifer in Supernatural
Actor Mark Pellegrino played the most popular incarnation of Lucifer in The CW fantasy-drama series Supernatural. The actor first played the role during the show’s fifth season, making sporadic appearances over the years. However, Misha Collins also played the role after Castiel becomes a vessel for Lucifer.

During an interview with Radio Radio X, Pellegrino discussed his work on the series, with the actor admitting that Collins consulted him for his performance as Lucifer in the series.
Misha actually did spend quite a bit of time with me to bring my characterization to his version of Lucifer. That was great. That gave the character a consistency throughout that I think people would look for.
Pellegrino made the above statement, explaining that Collins was eager to have some form of connective tissue between both iterations of the character.
Furthermore, the actor added that his wife and Collins texted each other constantly while shooting the scenes, adding more of his characterization to the latter’s wherever necessary. As a result, it is safe to say that Collins learned from the best version of the character to craft his take.
Mark Pellegrino discussed developing his take on Lucifer in Supernatural

In the same interview, Pellegrino also talked about how he developed his version of Lucifer, especially since the figure has a consistent media presence. The actor credited the show’s writing team with providing him with a solid foundation for his characterization of Lucifer.
I think the Supernatural writers did that for me, because they composed a character dynamic that fit nicely into the family dynamic that the show explores throughout the 15 seasons.
Pellegrino made the above comment, explaining how his characterization of Lucifer fit in perfectly with the show’s family dynamic.
The actor added that the show’s exploration of themes of loyalty and betrayal were reflected in Lucifer’s relationship with his father, similar to the tribulations faced by the Winchester brothers. As a result, his take had solid and understandable motivations that were consistent with the show’s overall themes, making Lucifer such a fan-favorite villain.
