‘Dragon Ball DAIMA’s Biggest Fumble Is Not Bidding Farewell to Akira Toriyama in Its Final Episode

With the release of the final episode of Dragon Ball DAIMA, the enchanting series has finally concluded, bringing an end to one of the greatest Dragon Ball stories that fans have seen in a long time. The narrative was filled with many epic moments, which combined a sense of nostalgia and new additions to make the perfect series anyone could have hoped for.

What makes Dragon Ball DAIMA even more special is the fact that it was the last series on which the legendary Dragon Ball creator, Akira Toriyama, worked on before his passing due to an acute subdural hematoma at the age of 68. While the series honors Toriyama’s legacy in a lot of ways, fans are still disappointed by one aspect.

This aspect was Dragon Ball DAIMA’s inability to bid a proper farewell and pay homage to the legendary Dragon Ball creator in the final episode of the series. This is quite disappointing, considering the fact that the series could have never seen the light of day if it had not been for Toriyama.

Dragon Ball DAIMA has finally come to an end

February 28, 2025, saw the release of episode 20 of Dragon Ball DAIMA, which marked the conclusion of the series. The episode was titled “Maximum,” and it brought the story to an end with the defeat of Gomah, a new Demon King for the Demon Realm, and Goku and crew returning back to their home finally after a long stretch.

The Dragon Ball DAIMA storyline was quite intriguing, and despite the initial criticism, it managed to bring out the best within the franchise. With nostalgic moments like Kid Goku and the Demon Realm, it captured the fans’ attention and wrapped it up perfectly with the big surprise of making the iconic Super Saiyan 4 transformation canon in the story.

While Dragon Ball DAIMA ended on a perfect note, there are still some aspects of the series that need to be addressed. Hopefully, fans can get a second season of Dragon Ball DAIMA that would shed light on these incomplete interpretations and also come up with a new story that would enhance the Dragon Ball experience even more.

The one place where Dragon Ball DAIMA fumbled big time

Although Dragon Ball DAIMA did almost everything perfectly, the one thing it fumbled big time is not giving proper homage to Akira Toriyama.

Toriyama’s reputation needs no introduction, and his contribution to the anime and manga industry is something that cannot be measured. Plus, the fact that Dragon Ball DAIMA was his last series makes it even sadder.

The series had multiple ways to honor Toriyama’s legacy in the final episode of Dragon Ball DAIMA. One perfect example of this would have been the inclusion of Tori-Bot in the last episode to pay homage to the legendary creator. Tori-Bot is a character that Toriyama created to represent himself within the Dragon Ball storyline.

While the series did pay tribute to the Dragon Ball creator by releasing the final episode a day before his one-year death anniversary, his cameo within the story would have made more sense. Still, the success of Dragon Ball DAIMA is enough to honor Toriyama’s journey as a mangaka and keep his legacy alive for years.

Dragon Ball DAIMA is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
