After the tremendous success of the first season, 1923 has returned to the screens with its second season which is already garnering more than just fans’ attention. While it has Taylor Sheridan bringing back those iconic characters, it also seems to be pushing the two lead characters – Spencer and Alex – to face what might be the most dissatisfying fate for them.
For one, there are fan theories going around about the pair’s arc, with some of them being really disturbing. And following the latest turn of events and what the actor playing the character of Spencer Dutton in the saga – Brandon Sklenar – had to say about his and his love interest’s romance arc in the series, the showrunner might as well be plotting a rather dark turn of events for them.

While Spencer Dutton (played by Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra (played by Julia Schlaepfer) have been at the center of 1923 so far, there are chances that their romantic arc may not end on a happily ever after note after all. One of the reasons behind this speculation is that showrunner Taylor Sheridan doesn’t always write happy endings for his characters to bring about that drama.
But that’s not all, for the Spencer portrayer himself pretty much admitted that their journey ahead would be both hopeful and tragic. During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he was asked to shed light on the respective character’s journey ahead going forward in the series, now that even the second season is out and making rounds among fans. To this, Sklenar said:
It’s all the things. I can’t say anything specially, but I can say it’s all the things all at once. I can’t say anything else! I can say that you will genuinely love it. I think everyone who watches it is going to be moved by it. I’m supremely confident that people will love the arc of every character in the show. Taylor delivered over and above in these pages and in the way he wrote this.
This has led fans to speculate that a truly harrowing plotline is lying in store for the pair. Putting in perspective the preview picture of Alex where she has her blouse ripped with blood on it, fans are predicting that, since she already caught tuberculosis from the tugboat captain in season one of the show, she might as well start showing signs of it by the time she reaches Montana.
As fans have been theorizing on Reddit, that preview picture might be the masterminds’ attempt at “trying to trick us into thinking she was attacked but really, she had a coughing fit (hence the blood) and ripped her own shirt in a panic, or another passenger did attack her because they were pissed she traveling with active TB.” So a tragic fate awaits Julia Schlaepfer’s character?

Ever since theories have started surfacing about the heartbreaking fate Alex and Spencer may be headed to in the currently ongoing second season of 1923, thanks to Sheridan’s knack for writing tragic endings and Sklenar’s comments on the same, fans can’t help but feel that they might as brace themselves for a disappointing and dissatisfying turn of events.
On the one hand, while some fans are downright calling out this presumed turn of events being upsetting, some others are pointing out how this arc feels similar to what happened in Red Dead Redemption 2, the video game, calling it lazy writing if that’s the case.
For those unversed, the video game had Arthur Morgan contracting tuberculosis and passing away by the end of the game – similar to what fans are expecting to happen in the ongoing season 2 of the Western drama. All in all, taking to Reddit, here’s a sneak peek into their discussions about the same:
