The early years pupil is understood to have gotten to the school gates alone before a staff member saw them.

Afterwards, the child was “quickly” escorted back into the nursery building.

South Lanarkshire Council has reported the incident to the Care Inspectorate.

Jacqueline Wallace, head of education (Primary and Early Years) at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “I can confirm that a child did very briefly leave the nursery.

“While the child was intercepted by a member of nursery staff and was quickly returned to the premises, it is nonetheless a matter we take very seriously.

“We have therefore been in discussion with the child’s parents and are reviewing the incident in order to learn any lessons. We have also reported the matter to the Care Inspectorate.”

A Care Inspectorate spokesperson said: “The Care Inspectorate has been notified of an incident involving a child attending this nursery.

“We are liaising with the service provider to ensure the safety of children is paramount and will take any further appropriate action as required.

“The safety of every child who experiences care is always our first priority.”
