We May Never Get George R.R. Martin’s The Winds of Winter but Watch Him Read 1 Chapter From His Unfinished Book

It’s a shame that George R.R. Martin is taking way too long to deliver the highly anticipated sixth installment of his A Song of Ice and Fire series. The Winds of Winter, a project he started no later than 2011, remains in progress despite his attempt to publish it before the final season of Game of Thrones.

There are many factors as to why he struggles to finish it. He said that he juggles multiple tasks at hand, some of them concerned with the series spinoffs, such as House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, while others were completely unrelated projects.

It’s not easy to write a novel, but George R.R. Martin had more than a decade to brainstorm and actually put words onto paper. He is aware of the pressure from fans; unfortunately, it does not seem to work at all—in fact, he revealed last December that there is a possibility he might never finish it. “A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

Still, he assured fans that it remains his top priority, although he did not say that he also has multiple other projects demanding his attention. It’s a good thing that Martin gave us a preview of the chapters from The Winds of Winter in 2016. He also read an excerpt from Victarion I during his interview at the Toronto International Film Festival. Watch the clip below:

It’s evident how mesmerizing it is to hear Martin’s voice while reading. The audience was clearly enthralled by the story and obviously eager to hear more. Unfortunately, he won’t be releasing any more sample chapters.

He was glad to have done it in the past, but when his novella The Sons of the Dragon was released as part of The Book of Swords anthology, he read nothing but bad reviews and summaries of it went online, with fans losing the excitement of reading the actual material for the first time. “It’s not worth it putting up sample chapters and giving readings if it means it will come back and bite me in the a** when the book is finally published,” he wrote as a reply in a comment on Not a Blog.

The last time Martin mentioned The Winds of Winter on his site was back in January, although he did not provide any progress report on it. He only said that he would start writing The Village Hero, another Dunk and Egg story, once he’s finished with the sixth book.

While many fans out there have started to lose hope, there are still the patient ones who believe Martin will get it done. In the meantime, we’ve got a lot of live-action projects on deck that will keep us occupied for the next few years.
