“She gets stronger as she gets more and more nude”: The Sexism in Black Clover is Evident, One Black Bull’s Transformations Keep Stripping Her Naked

Yuki Tabata has provided Black Clover fans with a consistent supply of fan service for years. But while enjoying this fan service, fans often forget that the author is slowly stripping his female characters under the guise of powerups. The prime victim of this trend in Black Clover is Noelle.

Throughout the years, Noelle has achieved some powerful transformations. But each time, they were accompanied by questionable outfits. Even worse is the fact that as time goes by, the outfits become more and more skimpy.

In Black Clover, Noelle has achieved a number of power-ups and transformations. With each major powerup, Noelle was equipped with new armor, each of them being designed for specific types of battles. But as she becomes more and more powerful, the slow stripping of clothes becomes more evident each time.

Noelle’s first major transformation was her Valkyrie Dress. While using it, she was equipped with a proper armor that covered almost her entire body, while also highlighting her curvaceous figure. The armor consisted of a body piece, a skirt, arm guards, and thigh-high protection.

The next to debut was her Valkyrie Armor Mermaid Form. In it, Noelle’s legs were transformed into a fishtail. There was simply no body armor and her chest was covered with what can only be called two shiny and scaly rags. This is where the situation began to escalate.

Noelle’s armors are a testament to the sexism in Black Clover

Two of the most powerful transformations of Noelle are the Saint Valkyrie Armor and the recently introduced Valkyrie Dress: Dragon Form. In Spirit Dive: Saint Valkyrie Armor, Noelle’s curves were highlighted once again with an armor that barely covered anything other than her torso and half her legs. The Dragon Form? It only provides protection to 1/4th of her chest and her groin region, along with knee-length boots.

The transformations might look cool, but why do they have to get skimpier each time? It is almost as if Black Clover is using the formula of sexist games, where only guys get full body armor while women have to deal with a few pieces of metal that barely cover anything.

Sure, there are muscular male characters in Black Clover, and Yuki Tabata has also tried using Asta as a thirst trap, but none of it has escalated to Noelle’s situation. It feels sexist to target one of the strongest female characters in the show and to only focus on how luscious she looks while fighting. Yes, these are magic armors, and visual coverage might not matter, but where will the stripping of Noelle stop?

The Black Clover manga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
