The Apple TV+ series Severance has been one of the best creations from the streaming platform. After a three-year hiatus, the show returned with its sophomore season, expanding on the world of Lumon Industries and its severance procedure. The latest episode, ‘Chikhai Bardo’ revealed intimate details about series lead Mark and his wife Gemma’s life.
The episode also saw stand-up comic and actress Sandra Bernhard in a guest role as an unnamed nurse. Bernhard has played a variety of roles in her career but is best known for her comedy and her beef with Mariah Carey, which she has reportedly put to rest now. Her comments against the pop star were especially disturbing way back in the day.
Sandra Bernhard has a connection to Gemma in Severance season 2
The second season of Severance has built on the mythos of Lumon Industries and the severance procedure. The show is set in an office space where the employees are severed from their outside selves, thus giving themselves a proper work-life balance. However, the nature of their work and the requirement for compartmentalization is still unknown.
While the episodes till now have largely focused on Adam Scott’s Mark and his experience as a severed employee, the latest episode, ‘Chikhai Bardo’ explored his presumed dead wife Gemma. Also known as Ms. Casey, the severed space’s wellness counsellor, the episode shows Gemma’s tortured existence in Lumon’s lab as the world believes she is dead.
The episode also sees stand-up comic Sandra Bernhard make her debut on the show as an unnamed nurse. She greets Gemma first and asks her some disturbing questions regarding drowning and suffocation in a mudslide. She also does a general health checkup before sending Gemma off to her misery behind the mystery doors.
As the episode progresses, Gemma’s struggle with her miscarriage, which leads to issues in her marriage to Mark, is shown in detail while her time in Lumon reveals her having lived through many tortured existences as multiple ‘Innies’. Bernhard’s nurse seems to be a facilitator to this life of imprisonment as the world believes her to be dead and liberated.
Sandra Bernhard received backlash for insulting Mariah Carey and her identity
While she tortures Dichen Lachman’s Gemma in Severance, Sandra Bernhard is no stranger to being the bad person as she has courted many controversies. Apart from publicly screaming at a political commentator and giving r*pe threats to politician Sarah Palin (via Daily News), she also insulted Mariah Carey.
Bernhard reportedly called out Carey leaning on her biracial identity in one of her comedy specials and even allegedly called her the ‘n-word’. Model Naomi Campbell condemned the actress during an interview with Carey and came to the latter’s support (via Naomi),
One of the things that hurt me, because I care about you and I care about the past, was what Sandra said. I was just like, ‘Are you for real?’ How did that even slide by? That is so rude and disrespectful. And I will say it here: completely racist.
Campbell also called out Sandra Bernhard’s hypocrisy in expressing her solidarity with the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement after insulting the community with such past incidents.
