Four ways young people can save while having fun – from railcards to gym memberships

TRYING to balance living costs with going out and having fun can be hard for most, especially the young.

But there are lots of schemes to help the under-25s save cash.

For anyone who frequently uses the train, a 16-25 National Railcard can be well worth the £30 investment for a year[/caption]

Follow these tips to see how you or family members can benefit . . .

TRAVEL: For anyone who frequently uses the train, a 16-25 National Railcard can be well worth the £30 investment for a year or £70 for three years.

It gives a third off fares, and you can get it up until the day before your 25th birthday — meaning it can be in place until the holder is almost 28.

Another option is the National Express Young Person’s Coachcard for people aged between 16 and 26.

It costs £15 for a year or £35 for three years and gives a third off standard and fully flexible fares.

The card also enables £15 day returns anywhere in the UK on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

You should also look out for local bus schemes, which often provide discounted travel for young people.

CULTURE: Under 30s can get a National Art pass to gain free entry to more than 250 venues, including museums and castles around the country.

The membership is £37.50 in the first year and also reduces the cost of exhibitions at selected venues by 50 per cent.

The free to join Tate Collective offers 16 to 25-year-olds £5 exhibition tickets as well as access to other free events such as workshops and performances.

CINEMA: Cinema chain Curzon offers a free under-25 membership which gives discounts on tickets, food and drink.

Picturehouse cinemas offers £5.99 tickets to under 25s from Monday to Thursday.

FITNESS: Young people aged 16 to 22 can get discounted memberships at Village health clubs.

There are sites across the UK and exact prices vary by location.

It’s also worth checking local leisure centres which often give discounted rates for young people.
