Edge Can Never be John Cena or Triple H and His Last WWE Run Proves It

The final years of the career of wrestling stars are considered very important for the future of the business. The top promotions majorly use it as an opportunity to shape up their current rosters and give significant push to the talents of today at the expense of the veterans.

Over the years, many veterans have put over younger stars to elevate their status in WWE. A notable example was The Undertaker taking a crushing defeat at the hands of Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33, which gave a huge push to the then-young star who ultimately became the face of the company.

Moreover, top legends like Triple H and John Cena did the same in the final years of their career. Triple H had been doing the same in his prime years as well, putting over stars like John Cena and Batista and, later on, Roman Reigns, Ronda Rousey, and Seth Rollins.

On the other hand, John Cena also followed suit, pushing multiple WWE stars of today in his final run, such as Austin Theory and, most recently, Jey Uso, who won the 2025 Royal Rumble despite overwhelming support from fans to see him win. However, it is difficult to include WWE Hall of Famer Edge in this same conversation after witnessing his last run in the global juggernaut.

Why can’t Edge ever be a veteran like John Cena & Triple H?

Edge came back to the WWE in 2020 after being out of action for nine years due to neck-related issues. The Rated-R Superstar was expected to engage in dream feuds and use his veteran status to put over the rising stars of the business. But it turns out that his final run was all about himself and not for the future of the business unlike how John Cena and Triple H saw things.

The 11-time World Champion wrestled in 26 matches in WWE during his second run. Out of them, he was victorious in 18 of them which comes as a huge shock as he wrestled some of the brightest talents in WWE today and refused to put them over on important stages.

In fact, it was only Roman Reigns, who reigned as the flagship star of the company, who was not booked to lose to Edge, pinning him more than once in matches. This was done possibly to preserve his historic championship reign and status as the face of WWE.

Apart from that, Edge wrestled the likes of Seth Rollins, The Miz, and Finn Balor and did not put over any of the top fixtures of the roster today who wrestled and appeared more than him. The Rated-R Superstar did not even lose to veterans who competed more than him, like Randy Orton and AJ Styles, and he even did not let Sheamus have the win in his final WWE match in 2023. It is shocking to analyze because in the same run, he helped WWE make history with a request to Vince McMahon.

Even after the beginning of his AEW career, Edge has lost only five times in the 28 matches he wrestled. Only his best friend, Christian Cage, got the decisive win over him, but they are still tied at 2-2 in All Elite Wrestling.

While Edge has mentioned that he wants to put over a younger star in the last match of his career, looking at his run as a wrestling veteran, it seems unlikely that Edge will go out as the loser in his final match.

Edge is set to wrestle a huge match in AEW

Edge is currently a top superstar in AEW, wrestling under the ring name “Cope.” He made his return to the company at the Worlds End pay-per-view after suffering an injury last year. Since then, he has been embroiled in a heated rivalry with the AEW World Champion, Jon Moxley.

Following months of altercations, Cope will now challenge Moxley for his title at AEW’s next major pay-per-view, Revolution. This will be his first World Championship match since debuting for the company back in 2023.

Cope’s past run in WWE has been a testimony of putting himself before the business. So there is a huge chance that he might want to go over Jon Moxley to etch the AEW World Championship on his resume and become the top guy in the company for a while before hanging up his boots for good.
