Alejandro Garnacho’s punishment for Man Utd tunnel strop revealed as Ruben Amorim sheds light on controversy

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO will buy his Manchester United team-mates a “punishment” dinner after his Old Trafford walk-off.

The Argentina winger stormed off the pitch after being subbed before half-time in the midweek win over Ipswich and did not return to the bench for the second half.

After the match, Amorim revealed he would be talking to Garnacho, who has already had a run-in with his boss after being dropped before Christmas.

But the 20-year-old went in to see Amorim and agreed to buy his team-mates a dinner – by way of an apology and an unofficial club “punishment.”

Amorim revealed: “It was funny because the next day, he came to me, to my office.

“I did some investigating and he went to the dressing room and changed his clothes because he was wet.

“He watched the game in a different place, not from the bench, and at the end of the game he was there, then went home.

“There is not an issue there but I told him at Manchester United that everything is important and perception at a big club is really important.

“He is going to pay for a dinner for all the team and that’s it.”

Garnacho was dropped, along with Marcus Rashford, for the Manchester derby in December due to attitude problems.

The United boss has been complimentary of his response since then – until Wednesday’s issue – and admits his stars sometimes struggle with the constant spotlight of playing for United, especially from social media.

He said: “I think he understands but they read everything, all the small things.

“I know the players quite well and I understand they are frustrated. He was playing quite well and he had to go off in that moment of the game.

“It’s hard to deal with everything but they have to deal with everything. I’m just trying to help them be better players but I understand modern football.

“It’s completely different for players nowadays with social media. They are so focusing on social media.

“You cannot go to social media without seeing a news story or a photo or or if you read something bad, you focus on that. You can have a hundred good things, but then one bad thing, you focus on the bad things.

“So I think it’s really hard for them. You can call it soft, but they have that access to criticism of what people think, that is really, really hard to to deal with that.

“But they have to and they need help to deal with that. So it’s the modern football and they have to be prepared for that.”

Garnacho suffered a knock in the Ipswich win and is a doubt for Sunday’s FA Cup tie with Fulham but is not suspended by the club.

Amorim has no other players returning from injury, leaving him with the same squad as midweek, apart from the suspended Patrick Dorgu.

Man Utd ratings vs Ipswich as Maguire saves the day after Onana makes case to be WORST ever signing

MANCHESTER UNITED eased their fears of the drop in a topsy-turvy relegation six-pointer with Ipswich.

The Red Devils triumphed 3-2 despite playing the second half with ten men.

A major cock-up from Patrick Dorgu and Andre Onana saw Ipswich take a third-minute lead through Jaden Philogene.

Then, after United had recovered to lead 2-1, Dorgu saw a straight red card for a poor challenge on Omari Hutchinson.

Philogene scored again to level it before the break only for Harry Maguire to nod in to be United’s saviour.

But who was United’s best player on the night?

Here, SunSport’s Phil Thomas reveals his Manchester United player ratings…
