After Watching Shrek 5 Teaser, We Are Begging DreamWorks to Do What Paramount Did With Sonic

DreamWorks finally released the teaser for Shrek 5, and well, let’s just say that fans have some opinions, starting off with the new animation style. It has been fifteen years since the last Shrek film was released. It goes without saying that things have changed since then in terms of how the animation industry works. With new technology, movies don’t really have to look like what they used to decades ago.

Unfortunately, it looks like fans are not too happy with how the animation style has changed for Shrek 5 since Shrek Forever After (2010). Throwing it back to the time when people basically bullied Paramount into changing how Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) looked, fans are hoping DreamWorks will hear their pleas too.

Far, Far Away’s finest are coming.”

Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Mike Myers are back after 15 years, bringing their iconic characters to life, and we cannot say that we aren’t excited. Despite the fact that it has been almost 2 decades since the last film in the franchise was released, you will find us seated at the theatres! There’s just something nostalgia does to you…

Apart from the returning actors, an addition was made to the cast of the franchise – Zendaya, who would be playing the role of Felicia, Shrek’s daughter. Of course, fans had intense opinions on this as well.

Coming to the animation style, it looks like while DreamWorks Animation tried to do something different, it has failed to impress some of the audience who are hoping the production company halts whatever it is that they’re doing to go back to the original design.

While many fans berate DWA, there are some who just don’t see why the animation style is such a problem. Take a look at some of the reactions below:

It is also worth noting that it might be impossible to go back to how things were 15-20 years ago because technology has changed massively. As the creator of the French animated series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir once pointed out on X, the “softwares” that were being used back in the day “don’t work anymore,” which is why they can’t bring the old animation style back.

How fans got Paramount to redesign Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog was supposed to hit theatres on November 08, 2019, but after the heavy criticism received upon the release of its trailer, the studio decided to push the release date to February 14, 2020. Why? Well, the fans were simply shocked to see how different Sonic looked in the trailer.

In an attempt to make Sonic look more anatomically correct, Paramount, or rather Marza Animation Planet and others took the creative liberty to shake things up, much to the horror of the fans. As a result, the new version of the blue hedgehog fell under intense scrutiny.

Not only fans, but the character’s original creators, Sega, were also not pleased with the redesign, especially the eyes. Writer Josh Miller once said (via IGN), “I don’t think SEGA was entirely happy with the eye decision, but these sorts of things you go, ‘It’s going to look weird if we don’t do this.’

The fans’ pleas did not fall on deaf ears, as director Jeff Fowler took to social media to announce that the much-needed changes were going to happen.

Clearly, constructive criticism works.

As far as Shrek 5 goes, we don’t know if DWA would be willing to turn their film around just to cater to some of the fans’ needs. There is still a long time to go before the film comes out, and who knows what might happen in the coming months!

Shrek 5 will be released in theaters on December 23, 2026.
