The Night King was a looming threat in Game of Thrones across several seasons, and while he was treated as the bringer of doom all over Westeros, the show left out one important detail about him. We know that he was created by The Children, and the White Walkers were simply a tragic consequence of the war between the First Men and the Children of the Forest.

In George R.R. Martin’s books, the Night King has not made an appearance yet, but he was simply a tale from the Age of Heroes passed around by people. His tragedy is known throughout the Northern region, and some even claim that they know who he used to be.
Game of Thrones forgot to include this significant Night King story
George R.R. Martin’s upcoming sixth novel, The Winds of Winter, may be far from finished, but it still promises a lot of potential narratives that fans have been dying to read. Especially with the underwhelming conclusion of Game of Thrones, our only comfort is finding out what happens next in the book.
In the show, the story of the Night King was not fully fleshed out, or at least, left out a bunch of important details about his backstory. It’s important to remember that, in the book, Martin has a figure called the Night’s King, and he’s a much different character. Many get confused with this, but it’s safe to assume that the showrunners based the Night King from this persona.

That being said, it’s a shame that the series failed to show us the part of the legend where the Night’s King was the thirteenth commander of the Night’s Watch whose love for a beautiful woman caused him his greatest downfall. It was said that he saw her while patrolling the Wall and immediately fell head over heels in love.
Rumor has it that he chased her and gave his soul to be with her, and upon returning to the Nightforth, he declared himself king and the woman his queen. He bound his brothers in the Night’s Watch to his will through magic and ruled the castle for 13 years with his corpse queen.
There is little information about this woman who had cold, white skin and eyes like blue stars. We don’t know what her intentions were, so hopefully, Martin will shed some light here in The Winds of Winter.
The Winds of Winter should clear things up about the Night King

Omitting this part of the Night’s King backstory not only took away the human side of him but also left out the intriguing detail about his corpse queen. We could assume that the budget constraints played a part here, as well as the showrunners’ decision to streamline the Night King’s arc.
This is why Martin’s The Winds of Winter is so important because only in his upcoming book can we find out the truth about his origin and if he would actually have a physical manifestation.
Game of Thrones is currently available to watch on Max.
